FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood Lancers kept their season alive on Thursday afternoon, defeating #4 Radford 3-0 in the first round of the NorPac Field Hockey Tournament. The Lancers, ranked #5 in the tournament, will take on the #1 seeded California Golden Bears in the 1 p.m. game on Friday. Longwood received an all-around performance from freshman
Olga Knop/Berlin, Germany (Wener von Siemens Gymnasium) who ended the day with one goal, one assist and a defensive save.
Longwood got off to a quick start, scoring their first goal of the game just four minutes into the competition. Junior
Julia Hernandez/Norfolk (Maury) placed a beautiful shot into the upper right side of the cage. The goal is number three on the season for Hernandez and her first ever in post season play.
It did not take long for the Lancers to net their second goal with Knop burying one at the 11:38 mark. The goal came on a Hernadez pass, which Knop proceeded to rip into the cage. Knop collected the ball just inside the shooting circle after a penalty corner and sent it flying into the top shelf of the cage.
Knop wasn't finished, assisting senior
Carra Bunner/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) on her goal in the 67th minute. The goal is Bunner's sixth of the season, which is second best on the team. The play began with a shot from Knop that was saved by the Radford keeper but not cleared. Bunner stepped up, taking advantage of the miscue and gave the Lancers their insurance goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) registered four saves, while the Radford keeper ended with six
The win marks the Lancers first post-season victory since joining the NorPac Conference. The Lancers were knocked out of last seasons tournament, hosted by Stanford, after losing to Davidson 4-2.
