BOX SCORE

BOONE, N.C. – The Longwood University field hockey team (7-9, 3-3 NorPac) fell to the University of the Pacific on Sunday afternoon, 3-2, in a neutral site NorPac conference match. The Lancers fought back from a 1-0 deficit in the second half, taking the lead, but were unable to keep Pacific from mounting a comeback of its own. Longwood returns to action on Wednesday, October 22, hosting Radford at the Athletics Complex at 7 p.m.

The Lancers fell behind early after a breakaway goal in the 12th minute of game put the Tigers up 1-0. Despite falling behind early, Longwood had the run of play in the first half, out-shooting Pacific 11-3 while having an 8-1 advantage in corners as well.

Junior Jessie Mantel/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) tied things up 1-1 in the 40th minute for the Lancers, after receiving a feed from classmate Melissa Strickland/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne). The goal was Mantel's second of the season and second in two games.

Longwood struck quickly following the Mantel goal, pressuring the Pacific defense and earning a penalty stroke just three minutes later. Senior Carla Binnewies/Hamburg, Germany (Carl von Ossietzkly Gymnasium) stepped up to take the stroke for the Lancers, sending it over the Pacific keeper and into the cage.

Pacific responded a minute later with a goal of its own to tie the game 2-2. The two teams flip-flopped possession until the 67th minute when the Pacific frontline countered, catching the Lancers defenders forward, allowing for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

Senior Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) played the entire game for the Lancers, coming up with four saves.

"We made two very bad mistakes and they cost us," head coach Iain Byers said. "We need to be more consistant. We're going to take a couple days off before our next match, to regroup both mentally and physically. We are going to keep pressing on and do our best to not focus on the past."
