FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University women’s basketball senior Chelsea Coward|Mechanicsville is this week’s Longwood Female Athlete of the Week. Coward, who currently leads the Lancers with 18.0 points per game and 11.4 rebounds per game, has recorded a double-double in the team’s two most recent outings. The team captain posted 18 points and 11 rebounds at Coppin State on Nov. 20 after notching 15 points and 17 boards against Murray State on Nov. 17. She also set a new career high with 29 points at North Carolina State on Nov. 15.
Question and Answer Session with Chelsea Coward
Q: You’ve already set new career-highs for points and rebounds this year. Did you do anything different to prepare for your senior season?
A: I always work on my game during the summer and preseason. I didn’t do anything different this year. I just came back to Longwood ready to play.
Q: You played a career-high 40 minutes against Murray State. How does it feel to be one of the few veteran leaders for this young team?
A: It’s a great feeling. I’m glad I have the opportunity to play and work with this group of incoming freshmen. I’m ready to win and so are they.
Q: Do you find yourself giving any of the younger players help or advice?
A: Yes, my coaches are constantly giving me advice and guidance, so I try to pass things along when I can.
Q: Do you have any pregame rituals?
A: I always talk to my mom before every game.
Q: Why did you choose to come to Longwood?
A: I chose Longwood because it is close to home and the team is very family oriented. We are all really close.
Q: What is your favorite Longwood tradition?
A: Spring Weekend
Q: Are you involved in any other activities?
A: I was teaching myself to play the guitar in the offseason, but I am putting it on hold until after the basketball season ends.
Q: Any role models?
A: My mother. She is my biggest fan. Also, Carmelo Anthony is my basketball role model.
Q: Any interesting facts about yourself or your family?
A: I can’t swim, nor do I ride bikes.

Q: What are your post grad plans?
A: I would possibly like to go overseas to play or maybe pursue my master’s degree.

A: I love my teammates. They are one of a kind.

A: Push yourself to be all you can be and never settle.
