Softball junior Elizabeth McCarthy helped the Lancers to a pair of wins on opening weekend, throwing 18.1 of the team's 27.0 innings at the South Carolina Classic in Columbia, S.C.
McCarthy logged a 1.15 ERA and scattered just 12 hits and six walks over her four starts. She struck out 16 hitters and allowed no more than one earned run in all four of her appearances.
McCarthy opened the season with seven innings of one-run ball against Ohio State, striking out seven Bobcat hitters. She took the loss, however, after her defense allowed an unearned run after an error in the 2-1 loss.
McCarthy bounced back to beat UNC Greensboro in the second game of the weekend, holding the Spartans to two hits and one run over four innings of a 9-1 victory. She followed with three scoreless frames against Big South foe Winthrop Saturday, allowing just one hit and three baserunners while striking out four in a 7-1 win.
Her final outing came against SEC foe and tournament host South Carolina, holding the Gamecocks to two runs -- one earned -- across 4.1 innings.
