SAINT HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – Matthew Hartley continued to lead the way for Longwood men's golf on day two at the Big South Championship.
 
He followed up yesterday's three-under round with a team-best two-under 69 to climb into a tie for first and help the Lancers stay in a tie for third at the par 71 course at Ocean Creek Golf Course at Fripp Island Resort.
 
NOTABLE RESULTS:
 
The Lancers are now tied with USC Upstate following a 283-290—573 (+5) line. Longwood sits two shots back of High Point in second and seven back of the leaders in Presbyterian. Gardner-Webb and Winthrop are tied for fifth, one shot behind Longwood and USC Upstate.
 
Once again, Hartley was on fire all day. He opened with a screaming first nine holes despite temperatures in the 50s at the start of the day and wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour in the morning.
 
Despite the conditions, Hartley carded five birdies in his first nine holes, playing them at three-under, and he finished with six birdies on the day. He is tied with Dewi John from Charleston Southern at five under with a 68-69—137 (-5).
 
Cameron Hardison battled his way to two birdies and 13 pars while not posting anything worse than a bogey amid the challenging conditions. He is tied for 11^th with a two-round tally of 71-72—143 (+1).
 
David Lafreniere is tied for 16^th following a day with 14 pars with a 75, giving him a 70-75—145 (+3), giving Longwood three players in the top 16 of the 41-player field.
 
Hunter Swidzinski is tied for 31^st after matching his score from the first day, going 74-74—148 (+6). Matthew Lyons is in 37^th with a 74-77—151 (+9).
 
WHAT THEY SAID:
 
"It's a good thing it doesn't have to be pretty because, outside of Matt Hartley, not much we did looked very good," said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. "Today's conditions definitely made scoring more difficult, but, at the same time, we didn't do a lot to help ourselves either. Although I'm not surprised, it's a little crazy how tightly the field is crammed together. Anybody who knows anything about college golf knows that every team literally has a chance tomorrow. Much like our plan going into today, we're going to have to keep our noses to the ground and not concern ourselves with anything other than taking care of our business."
