SAINT HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – Matthew Hartley led the way to help Longwood tie for third after the first round of the Big South Championship on Sunday afternoon.
 
The freshman is tied for third after matching his lowest round of the season, and he is one of three Lancers in the top 15 of the field on the par 71 course at the Ocean Creek Golf Club at Fripp Island Resort.
 
NOTABLE RESULTS:
 
Longwood is tied with Gardner-Webb for third after posting a one-under 283 as a team. The Lancers are one shot back of Presbyterian in second and two back of USC Upstate in first.
 
Hartley fired an eagle early in his round, and he added four birdies, three in his back nine, to card a 68 (-3) on the day. He was two-under in his final nine holes.
 
David Lafreniere joined Hartley under par, and the junior ended the day tied for eighth. He carded a one-under 70 thanks to four birdies on the day. He added 12 pars as well.
 
Cameron Hardison got off to a sharp start en route to posting an even-par 71. He tallied birdies on back-to-back-to-back holes, and he finished with four birdies on the day. He is tied for 14^th.
 
Matthew Lyons and Hunter Swidzinski are tied for 27^th after matching 74s (+3). Lyons had three of his four birdies on the front nine, while Swidzinski had one birdie and 14 pars.
 
WHAT THEY SAID:
 
"We accomplished our first goal—keep ourselves in contention," said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. "I felt like we did a pretty good job of keeping the ball in front of us all day and, simply, just did what we had to do. The weather turned, and the winds kicked up, which made the final 90 minutes or so Winthrop and us were out there interesting. We're in a good spot. We just each of us have to go do our jobs again tomorrow."
