Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
Rogers put Longwood on the board five minutes in, but the two defenses gummed things up effectively, leaving her strike as the only goal for the first eight minutes and change.
Â
Winthrop tied it on Tori Iannotti's goal, but Longwood quickly answered with back-to-back goals to take a 3-1 lead from DeFilippo and Rogers.
Â
However, Winthrop tied the game up with two goals in the final three minutes of the first quarter.
Â
Defenses reigned supreme in the middle two quarters, with both teams proving difficult to break down.
Jordan Fitzgerald put Longwood up 4-3 in the second, but Winthrop scored once in the second and once in the third for a 5-4 lead.
Â
Longwood answered. While the defense kept forcing turnovers,
Alexandra Hirst,
Mikaela Cook and
Ava Bower struck to give Longwood a 7-5 lead to end the third.
Â
Winthrop put one home early in the fourth, but again Longwood responded. Rogers, Hirst and Cook all tallied goals for a 10-6 lead, and the defense took the air out of the game for Winthrop's offense to preserve the win.
Â
Isabella McCullough (2-6) earned the win after making nine saves in the cage.
Â
Mikaylah Lindsay (5-5) took the loss despite making 10 saves.
Â
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- Zenie Newsom led Longwood with six ground balls while adding three caused turnovers
- Peyton Daley had four CTs to go with five ground balls
- Rogers, in addition to her three goals, added three ground balls
