Rogers' Hat Trick Leads Lancers, but Terriers Pull Away Late

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Longwood lacrosse rallied on the road to open Big South play at Wofford, but the Terriers (3-7, 1-0 Big South) held off the Lancers (1-6, 0-1 Big South) 22-9.

Madison Rogers led Longwood with her fifth multi-goal game, and six Lancers scored.

However, a feisty Wofford defense, coupled with five goals from Olivia Graebner gave the home side the edge.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood took the lead on a quick strike from Kendra DeFilippo, but Wofford rallied and answered with four goals to take a 5-2 lead after one quarter.

The two defenses made life challenging for each offense, especially in the opening 15 minutes, as the two offenses combined for 15 turnovers.

Wofford extended the lead to 7-3 early in the second, but Sarah Forman put one home for the Lancers to end the run, and Rogers struck twice more along with a goal from Ava Bower as Longwood pulled within two to close the half down 9-7.

Rogers completed the hat trick in the third with a free position goal, but the two teams traded goals early in the quarter before Wofford scored four straight to close the frame with a six-goal lead.

The Terriers extended the lead to 10 midway through the fourth quarter to pull away late.

Hannah Taylor earned the win in goal for Wofford after making five saves.

Isabella McCullough took the loss for the Lancers and made eight saves.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"I think we came out early and played well," said Longwood Head Coach Dwayne Hicks. "We had some good goals even with the turnovers. Then, between the unforced errors and penalties, we couldn't close the two-goal gap. We need to get better at the basics."
