Men's Golf Ties for Fifth at Ironwood Collegiate Classic

Swidzinski, Lafreniere Card Top 15 Finishes to lead Longwood

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Longwood men's golf closed out the Ironwood Collegiate Classic today with back-to-back rounds at the Ironwood Golf & Country Club in Greenville, North Carolina.

The Lancers tied for fifth after an up-and-down pair of rounds, matching fellow Big South foe Gardner-Webb.

Hunter Swidzinski had the team's low round of the day behind a strong close that helped him climb into a tie for 11th with fellow teammate David Lafreniere.

NOTABLE RESULTS:

The Lancers played 36 holes as part of a shifted schedule to beat expected inclement weather on Tuesday, with the first round taking place in lieu of a practice round on Sunday followed by the final two rounds today.

Longwood carded a seven-over 295 in the first round of the day before tearing off a nine-under 279 that was the best round of the day across the field and second-best round of the tournament. The strong closing kick gave the team a 283-295-279—857 (-7) that matched Gardner-Webb in fifth in the 15-team field.

Swidzinski put together two strong rounds on the day, going even-par for his first 18 before closing with a 67. He went on a tear to finish the round and carded six birdies in his final eight holes to climb into a tie for 11th in the 84-player field. He finished with a 73-72-67—212 (-4).

Lafreniere joined him in a tie for 11th with a three-round tally of 66-72-74—212 (-4). The junior had four birdies on the day.

Cameron Hardison shook off a slow second round with a sharp third round to climb into a tie for 34th. He was incredibly consistent in his final 18 holes en route to a 69 with four birdies and 13 pars. He finished with a three-round total of 72-76-69—217 (+1).

Josh Cummins wrapped up the event tied for 44th behind a 72-76-72—220 (+4). The freshman finished the day with six birdies in his 36 holes.

Gabriel Mainella and Kai Krishnan tied for 58th, and both improved in each round of the tournament. Mainella carded a one-under 71 in the final round to wrap up the event with a 78-75-71—224 (+8), and he had a pair of birdies along with 15 pars in that final round.

Krishnan, meanwhile, posted a 78-73-73—224 (+8) while competing as an individual. He had four birdies in his final 36 holes.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Today was definitely two different rounds," said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. "A lot of everything—some good and some bad—happened out there. Obviously, we struggled in the morning. I thought we actually played much better than we scored, but it was pretty clear that we made close to zero putts. We certainly played much more freely in the afternoon."

"I'm sure we all knew we had nothing to lose, so we played the type of aggressive golf we want to play," Fillman said of his team's third round. "Hunter really got it going late, and I was happy to see Cam play well in his hometown in front of a lot of people he knows. As a team, we're just a little feast or famine right now. We want to be consistent, and we talk about doing all the things it takes to be consistent. It may take some time, but I know we'll get there."
