Trio of Lancers Compete at Griffin Invitational

Krishnan Makes College Debut, Fires Under-Par Round

PETERSBURG, Va. – Longwood men's golf had a trio of individuals compete at the 2025 Griffin Invitational at the Country Club of Petersburg.

Kai Krishnan, Matthew Lyons and Alexander Hoerner all competed at the event, which is named in memory of Griffin Clark and is hosted by Saint Leo.

Clark was recruited by Longwood Head Golf Coach Kevin Fillman, but events led to Clark enrolling at Saint Leo University in Florida, where he clinched the winning point in the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship. The following summer, he was killed in a car accident near his home. Saint Leo hosts the invitational every fall, alternating the location between Petersburg, Virginia and Florida.

NOTABLE RESULTS:

Krishnan made is Longwood debut, and he is tied for 24th following his first 36 holes. He shook off a slow start in the first round to card an excellent second round.

The freshman was consistent in that second round, carding a pair of birdies and 15 pars en route to his one-under 71. He finished 76-71—147 (+3).

Lyons, meanwhile, made his first appearance in a competitive round for Longwood in more than a year after missing last season due to injury. He shaved four strokes off of his first round score to finish tied for 44th with a 77-73—150 (+6).

Hoerner was at his best in the opening round, when he shot a 73. He ended the day tied for 64th with a 73-81—154 (+10).

WHAT THEY SAID:

"I thought we did some pretty good things today," said Fillman. "We also did some of what I would call silly things that cost guys a few shots. We're a bit of a work in progress. That's why playing these rounds under competitive conditions is so important in terms of where we're trying to go as a team."

"It was great to see Kai post an under-par round on his first day out there," Fillman added. "After he had to sit out last year after shoulder surgery, I was also happy for Matt to go play. All this will help us in the future."

UP NEXT:

The Lancers play the third and final round of the invitational on Tuesday morning.
