HARBINGER, N.C. – David Lafreniere and
Matthew Lyons paced Longwood men's golf on a challenging day to open the ODU/Kilmarlic Invitational.
Due to impending weather, teams played 27 holes instead of the originally scheduled 18 at the Par 71 Kilmarlic Golf Club.
Lafreniere and Lyons ended the day tied for first, as did the Lancers, with 27 holes to play.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Despite wind that got stronger as the day went on, Lafreniere and Lyons helped the Lancers tie with Georgetown at the top of the leaderboard. The two teams are tied at one-under. Longwood shot a 287-140—427 (-1).
Lyons was the team leader in the first round, posting a team-best 69 that was two-under par. He finished the round with an eagle, one of two on the day for him, and he had a trio of birdies in the round to boot.
He played nine holes in the second round and had an eagle while shooting one under in that stretch to be part of a four-way tie for first.
Lafreniere carded a one-under 70 to open the day behind steady, consistent play that saw him post three birdies. He had three more in nine holes to start his second round to finish the day three under par and move into a tie for first.
Matthew Hartley is tied for 24
th. He played the first round at a one-over 73 and did the same in his first nine holes of the second round. On the day he had three birdies.
Hunter Swidzinski ended the day tied for 35
th. He played his opening round at a four-over 75, but he carded an eagle and two birdies while playing the first nine holes of his second round at even par.
Cameron Hardison finished tied for 41
st on the day. He had a six-over 77 in the opening round but started his second round strong with three birdies in nine holes to play them at one under.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"As I told the guys when we finished, I'm really happy with how we hung in there all day," said Longwood Head Coach
Kevin Fillman. "It certainly was not without challenges, a few of which were self-inflicted, but we did what we had to do to keep ourselves in the mix. Overall, it was a fairly good day to score, especially during the first half of the opening round. There's no question it got more difficult as the day went on. Tomorrow's going to get very bumpy, so we're going to have to have a fantastic attitude and go be tougher than everybody else in order to earn the finish we want."
