Box Score BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Redshirt senior
Adriana Shipp-Davis scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting, but Gardner-Webb put four in double figures and nailed 12 3-pointers for a 74-59 Big South Conference win over the Longwood women's basketball team at Paul Porter Arena Wednesday.
Â
The Runnin' Bulldogs (3-16, 2-4 Big South) got 15 points apiece from Ashley Hawkins and Grace Pack, 12 from Micahla Funderburk and 10 more from Trinity Moreland in the victory.
Â
Longwood, which trailed 39-20 at halftime, fought its way back into the game in large part due to the second half play of freshman forward
Frances Ulysse. The Montreal, Quebec, native scored 12 of her career-high 15 points in the third period, pulling the Lancers to within 54-44 at the start of the final 10 minutes. Free throws by
Janay Turner and Ulysse at the nine-minute mark of the fourth helped Longwood (4-15, 2-5) creep to 54-46 before Lauren Bailey and Pack hit treys on consecutive possessions to restore a double-digit, 60-48, Bulldogs' lead with 7:33 remaining.
Â
Gardner-Webb bolted to a 24-13 lead through the first quarter on 10-for 19 (52.6 percent) shooting. Hawkins and Moreland scored six points each in the quarter as the Lancers struggled to find their own rhythm.
Â
After
Anne-Hamilton LeRoy stripped a GWU player of the ball and knocked down a jumper to make it a 24-18 game and move into eighth place on the Longwood career scoring chart, Gardner-Webb held LU off the scoreboard for the next seven minutes, building the lead.
Â
Ulysse ended the drought on a layup with 1:33 left prior to Funderburk draining her team's eighth triple of the half with just two ticks left.
Â
The Lancers started the second half with a 10-4 run in three minutes. GWU, though, responded with eight straight points, punctuated with a Pack 3-pointer, for a 21-point advantage midway through the quarter.
Â
Shipp-Davis and Ulysse tallied the next seven points to shave the lead to 51-37 with 3:55 on the clock. Ulysee and
Otaifo Esenabhalu, who converted a layup at the third-quarter buzzer scored the final points of period and gave LU a shot of energy for the fourth.
Â
Esenabhalu finished with six points and 11 boards, the third double-figure rebounding game of her freshman season.
Â
Longwood is back in action Saturday, hosting Regent at the Joan Perry Brock Center. Tip time is 2 p.m.
