FARMVILLE, Va.- The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released its annual Academic All-State team today, and six Longwood athletes were honored for their achievements.
The six Lancer student-athletes receiving this academic recognition are women's cross country sophomore
Kiersten Witte, women's golf senior Erica Feuerhelm, women's soccer senior
Isa Villarreal, men's basketball junior
Jesper Granlund, men's cross country sophomore
Alec Daniel and men's soccer sophomore
Drew Messick.
Witte, a rising junior from Glen Allen, Virginia, studies kinesiology at Longwood. She competed in a variety of events for the Lancers this past season as the team is expanding to include women's outdoor track this next spring. She ran in the Lancer Pink Invitational in the fall, and she competed at multiple track events in the spring, including the 800 meters race and select relays. She has been on the President's or Dean's List in every semester at Longwood.
Feuerhelm studied psychology during her time in Farmville. The Ellsworth, Wisconsin native transferred to Longwood prior to the 2021-22 season and competed in one competition over the course of her two years with the team (2021 Edisto Island Invitational). Feuerhelm has earned a spot on the President's List twice and the Dean's List once in four semesters at Longwood.
Villarreal was a four-year member of the women's soccer team and graduated Longwood with a degree in biology with a concentration in pre-med while also obtaining minors in both chemistry and criminal justice. The senior from Newport News, Virginia did not see game action in 2022 due to injury, but she excelled in the classroom regardless. She has earned a spot on the President's or Dean's List in every semester during her time at Longwood.
Headed into his fourth year in Farmville, Granlund has been a prominent fixture during Longwood's most successful stretch of Division-I men's basketball. The Helsinki, Finland native averaged 5.9 points per game with a 33.3% clip from three all while excelling as a business administration student in the classroom. He has also been on the President's List or Dean's List in every semester at Longwood as he enters his senior year.
Daniel participated in every race for men's cross country this season, running in a variety of events in the process. The business administration major will return to the Lancers' roster as a solid contributor again this upcoming season, and he also will be running in the team's first season of men's outdoor track next spring. Daniel has garnered President's List or Dean's List honors in each of his four semesters at Longwood.
Messick, a rising junior from Dumfries, Virginia, excelled as a business administration major this past season while appearing in sixteen out of seventeen games for the Lancers. He tallied one goal in 560 minutes played during the 2022 campaign, and he has also excelled in the classroom. He has been a President's List or Dean's List selection for all four of his semesters as a Lancer.
