FARMVILLE, Va. – Gregory Ryan, Jr. was named the Big South Player of the Week while
Guillermo Garcia Jr. was named the Big South Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Ryan had a monster week on offense and led the Lancers with 11 RBI while batting .400 (8-20) at the plate. Half of his base hits were for extra bases with two home runs, a triple and a double. He had a grand slam to clinch the series against Presbyterian, and he drove in 7 RBI, one shy of the team's single-game record.
He also went 3-5 with 3 RBI and a home run in the team's win over VCU in a midweek game. He tied for the team lead with seven runs scored as well. His big finale against PC gave Longwood its first series win in Clinton.
Garcia was masterful this week as he transitioned to a starting role. He didn't allow a run in 7.0 innings of work, and he struck out eight while holding his opponents to a .130 batting average.
He put together 6.0 scoreless innings over the weekend in a start against Presbyterian while racking up seven strikeouts against three hits and two walks. He retired the side in order one time through the lineup, and he went three-up, three-down in four of his 6.0 innings. He also tossed 1.0 scoreless innings in a midweek start against VCU as he transitioned to a weekend start.
Following a series win over Presbyterian, Longwood closes out its regular season schedule at home this week against Winthrop. First pitch of game one against the Eagles is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
