CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After
dropping their first game of this weekend's Cavalier Classic hosted by both Virginia and Longwood, the Lancers left no questions unanswered today. Longwood picked up wins in both of its contests today, defeating George Washington 7-0 and Howard 6-2.
Maggie Chapin earned the win in Longwood's first bout against GW, tossing a complete seven innings to go along with four strikeouts, zero runs allowed, and only one walk.
The win over Howard was attributed to
Er'ron Burton, who started the game and threw 6.1 innings before
Reggie Kanagawa entered in relief. Burton struck out three and allowed zero earned runs on the mound today.
"I'm proud of our pitchers for finishing well and growing daily on the mound," said head coach
Dr. Megan Brown on her pitching staff's performance.
In addition to a solid showing in the circle for Longwood, it's safe to say that the bats were swinging as well. The Lancers tallied 20 hits across both games, sending 13 runs across the plate in the process.
Senior
Kelly Park had the highlight of the game against GW, connecting on a deep shot to left field that went over the wall for a three-run homer.
Lindsey Hay also had a hot hand against GW, going 3-3 with an RBI. Hay was one of four batters with two or more hits against the Colonials, including
Lauren Taylor,
Kayley DeVivi, and
Maryanna Guy.
After batting 2-3 in game one, Guy's great day at the plate continued against Howard. She blasted a two-run shot to left field on her first at-bat, marking the first home run of the freshman's career.
Leading 3-1 in the top of the sixth, an offensive eruption put the Lancers up for good over the Bison. Consecutive RBI singles from
Sophia Knock,
Lauren Fox, and
Jaden Pone put the exclamation point on what was a solid showing on both sides of the field for Longwood.
"Consistency on offense is key for any team," said Dr. Brown. "It was good to see us work together for positive offensive outcomes."
The Lancers will not play any games tomorrow and return to Farmville to conclude the Cavalier Classic on Sunday. Longwood is set to face off against St. John's at 11 a.m. and Maryland Eastern Shore at 4 p.m. in the team's home-opening games.
"Tomorrow is definitely a day of preparation as we have two tough games ahead of us on Sunday," said Dr. Brown. "Excited to be at home and the chance to play in front of our amazing fans."
