CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Longwood set sail on another weekend chalk full of softball today at the Cavalier Classic, a multi-team event taking place in both Farmville and at the University of Virginia. The Lancers first game of the event took place in Charlottesville today against UVA, which the Cavaliers won by a score of 5-1.
Er'ron Burton started on the circle for Longwood (4-6), tossing 2.2 innings before freshman
Maggie Chapin entered in her relief. The pair conceded seven hits and three earned runs in the weekend's opening game.
Virginia (7-4) was led by their pitching, allowing only three hits and zero earned runs. Molly Grube earned the win for the ACC side, striking out eight across 18 at bats.
After surrendering an RBI single in the bottom of the second, Longwood responded.
Lauren Taylor's single was able to get by the second baseman for an error, making way for her to advance to second and for
Jaden Pone to score and tie the game at one apiece.
However, Pone's dash home would be the only run across the plate for the Lancers this afternoon. Longwood found themselves with another scoring opportunity in the top of the fifth inning as
Lauren Fox and Taylor singled, but the Lancers were unable to convert with runners on base.
Although Pone singled in the top of the seventh, two outs had already been made and her effort was too late. Virginia snapped a six-game Longwood win streak against them, their first win over the Lancers since 2016. Longwood leads the all-time Division-I era series 18-11.
"Lots of lessons to be taken from tonight," said head coach
Dr. Megan Brown. "We learned where we need to make specific adjustments to continue to grow as a team."
The Lancers will have another opportunity against the Cavaliers this season, as Longwood will welcome them to Farmville on May 2
nd. In the meantime, Longwood continues play at the Cavalier Classic tomorrow against George Washington at 12:30 p.m. followed by a tilt with Howard at 3 p.m.
"We're looking to bounce back with great adjustments," said Dr. Brown. "Keeping 'the main thing' the main thing and playing Longwood softball."
