WACO, Texas – Longwood concluded play at the Getterman Classic this morning, rallying in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Army 6-5. Down to their last out, freshman
Sophia Knock delivered for the Lancers with a 2 RBI single to give the Lancers the lead and their third win of the weekend.
Reggie Kanagawa started on the mound for Longwood (4-5), throwing three full innings before being replaced by
Maggie Chapin. Sophomore
Er'ron Burton claimed the win, delivering 1.2 scoreless innings without giving up a hit to wrap up the game.
Army (2-6), who
Longwood defeated 10-3 in their first matchup on Friday, came out of the gates strong, scoring two runs in the bottom of first. In a repeat of the Lancers' wins this weekend, Longwood responded well to earn their fourth win of the season and second one-run win.
"These are games that build the character of a team," said Dr. Brown. "They show your grit. I'm so proud of their grit and fight today."
Lauren Taylor brought the Longwood dugout to their feet in the top of the third, blasting a home run over the left field wall in what was the first Lancers homer of the year.
Emily Vinson tied it up with an RBI double in the same inning, and Taylor gave Longwood the lead on a 2 RBI single one inning later.
Army rallied though, and the Black Knights took a 5-4 lead into the top of the seventh. The Lancers weren't deterred, putting two baserunners in scoring position to set up Knock's hero moment. Facing a full-count, Knock delivered, roping on a single to center field that put the Lancers ahead for good.
"I am so proud of the fight our young ladies showed today," said head coach
Dr. Megan Brown. "We have spoken about timely hitting and it was exciting to see them execute well today."
Burton preserved the win in the home half of the seventh to cap a day that saw three pitchers play a role in the team's fifth game of the weekend. Army put the tying run at third and the game-winning run at second, but Burton sealed the deal by inducing a lineout to left.
"Today was definitely a staff win," said Dr. Brown on her pitching staff. "Each pitcher played a key role and stood firm in the face of adversity."
The Lancers will be back in action this upcoming Thursday and Friday as they head to Charlottesville, Virginia for the Cavalier Classic. Longwood will battle Virginia, George Washington, and Howard before heading home for a double-header against St. John's and Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday.
