WACO, Texas – A battle-tested Longwood softball team embarked on its second consecutive weekend tournament, this time in Waco, Texas at the Getterman Classic. The Lancers split their opening games of the weekend today, dropping a 10-0 result to
unanimous No. 1 Oklahoma and defeating Army 10-3 in an offensive showcase.
Er'ron Burton started on the mound in both contests, earning a win and loss in the process. The majority of innings today were thrown by freshman
Maggie Chapin, who came in relief of Burton in both games. Senior
Leigha Hill also saw some action in the circle, throwing two innings against Oklahoma.
While Longwood did
upset No. 4 Florida State this past Saturday, the Lancers were unable to find the same success against their next top-five opponent.
Jaden Pone and
Korynna Anderson provided Longwood with their only two hits of the game, but neither resulted in runs coming across the plate.
Although Longwood only conceded five hits in the game, the Sooners converted when they had baserunners in scoring position. A five-run third and two-run fourth inning put Oklahoma up 10-0 headed into the fifth, and ultimately provided them with a run-rule victory.
"Definitely not the result we wanted but there were many positives," said head coach
Dr. Megan Brown on Longwood's loss to Oklahoma. "To play at the highest level, you have to know what it looks like firsthand. We are grateful for the experience we are gaining and look forward to the growth that comes from playing tough competition."
The Lancers looked to bounce back against Army in their second game of the day, and bounce back they did. Longwood brought ten runs across plate off of 14 hits in what was the team's most potent offensive performance thus far on the season.
Jaden Pone went a perfect 4-4 with one RBI while
Lauren Taylor,
Kayley DeVivi,
Lindsey Hay, and
Lauren Fox each batted home two runners. Eight Lancers scored runs against Army in what was a complete team effort on both sides of the field. Longwood's ten runs are the most the team has scored since an 11-2 victory over George Mason in April of 2022.
Despite conceding three runs in the top of the first, the Lancers held the Black Knights scoreless the rest of the way.
Maggie Chapin entered in relief of
Er'ron Burton in the first inning, pitching 6.1 scoreless innings to go along with four strikeouts.
"I'm very proud of our approach at the plate for the second game," said Dr. Brown. "We are always at our best when we work together. Always great to see."
Longwood retakes the field tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. to face on Stephen F. Austin followed by a tilt with the host (RV) Baylor Bears at 4 p.m. The Lancers round out the weekend with a rematch against Army on Sunday at 11 a.m.
"We still have three tough games left," said Dr. Brown. "We want to continue to work hard and compete for each pitch this weekend."
