RADFORD, Va. – The fall cross country season is officially underway for the Longwood men's and women's cross country teams. The two squads competed in the Radford Relays on Thursday evening, with the men having four relay teams and the women sending three.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The race featured a 3x3,100 relay, with the men having four squads comprised of 10 runners and the women having three teams of nine runners competing along with teams from fellow Big South squads Radford and Winthrop.
Longwood's top men's squad of
Sam Sager,
Ethan Pettyjohn and
Saad Khan combined for a time of 31:21.70 and finishing sixth among the 10 squads.
The top Lancer women's team of
Caroline Fairbanks,
Bailey Deaver and
Grace Puleo finished fifth of the 11 teams with a time of 38:18.10. Fairbanks had the top time among the Lancer women with a 12:02.6.
The second and third Lancer women's groups finished sixth and seventh in the field. The trio of
Lanie Grogg,
Lauren Vick and
Kiersten Witte ran a 39:39.20 to finish sixth in the field.
Rachel Simmons,
Aislinn Garcia and
Kathryn Oylear posted a time of 43:25.50 to finish seventh in the field. The Lancer women finished ahead of Winthrop in the final team standings.
The second group of Lancer men, comprised of
Benjamin Goulet,
Misha Wiley and
Alec Daniel, combined to run a 32:13.30, finishing eighth.
Longwood's final two men's teams were two-man teams, with
Tim Slater and Andrew Schaefer running a combined 21:39.8 and Nick Howell and
Connor Williams running a 23:19.3 for their two legs.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"It was a fun return to competition that enforced our mission statement for the season: 'Working Together,'" said Longwood head cross country coach
Brooke Craig about her team's performance in the relay. "We're at the end of our first training cycle, so nobody was fresh."
"I'm really happy with how gutsy everyone ran," Craig added. "We'll have a lighter training week leading into our home meet, and they are ready to compete."
