FARMVILLE, Va. – In a matchup between two teams that were unbeaten in Big South play, Furman took down Longwood 15-10 in a fast, physical battle.
Â
The trio of Hannah Dintino, Megan Beal and Sophie Shaw all scored three goals apiece for Furman (3-5, 3-0 Big South). Paige Harman added a pair of goals a team-best three assists as well for the Paladins.
Â
That was enough to offset a career day in goal for Longwood goalkeeper
Amelia Carlile. The freshman was sensational and racked up a career high 17 saves. However, Furman took advantage of 17 Longwood turnovers to outshoot the Lancers 39-17.
Â
The Lancer (5-6, 2-1 Big South) offense, meanwhile, was keyed by big days from both
Haley Moomau and
Miranda Helfenbein, as the duo scored three goals apiece. For Helfenbein, a freshman, the three goals were a new career high, and the two added an assist each as well.
"Unfortunately, today was a dissapointing loss," said Longwood head coach
Elaine Jones. "Sure, Furman caused some of our turnovers, but the majority were uncharacteristically self-inflicted. We need to continue to work on putting four quarters together."
Â
Moomau did her damage as part of a dynamic start for Longwood. The senior ripped off all three of her goals in the first 15 minutes to lead the Lancers, and Helfenbein had a goal and an assist.
Â
The Lancer defense was equally as sharp and shut down Furman's attack to give Longwood a 5-2 lead after the first 15 minutes.
Â
However, the Paladins responded with four straight goals to retake the lead in the second quarter. Dintino had a pair of goals in that stretch, and Shaw added one as did Lauren Farber. Dintino's second over a six-minute span gave Furman a 6-5 lead that the Paladins would never lose. While Helfenbein tied it up at six a few minutes later, Farber added her second goal of the game to give Furman the 7-6 lead at the break.
Furman stayed sharp through the third as well and scored five straight in the period. This time, Beal, Dintino, Shaw and Harman did the damage. That gave the Paladins a 12-7 lead headed to the fourth quarter.
Â
"We competed in spurts throughout the game, and there were some bright moments on defense, especially Amelia's 17 saves, and some nice connections on offense," Jones said. "But overall we just didn't compete and play the way we know we can for the entire game."
The Lancers battled back in the fourth quarter though and trimmed Furman's lead to three as Helfenbein and
Nicole Fordyce scored a goal apiece in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter.
Â
Furman bounced back and slowed the game down, and the Paladins closed it out over the final 10 minutes.
"We'll have to put this one behind us quickly though as we have to get ready for a tough Campbell team on Saturday," Jones said.
Â
Longwood stays at home to wrap up a two-game homestand by welcoming Campbell to Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field on Saturday afternoon. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
