Lancer Leadoff
  • Longwood is in the midst of an 11-game homestand that began on Friday, April 26. It is the longest homestand of the season for the Lancers
  • With VMI coming to Farmville, the Lancers will play their seventh different Commonwealth opponent in 2019. Longwood has a total of 11 games against in-state foes after playing Norfolk State and George Mason twice and Radford three times.
  • Longwood has hit 26 home runs this season after hitting one against USC Upstate. The Lancers have already surpassed their 2018 total of 23, and 11 players have hit a home run.
  • Mike Esposito threw his two best starts of the season in one week for the Lancers after earning the win against Norfolk State and striking out seven in five innings against USC Upstate.

  • Longwood has swatted nine home runs in April and 26 this season after hitting 23 in 2018.
  • Jacob Mitchell has hit a team-best seven home runs. Hunter Gilliam has hit four, Antwaun Tucker has hit three and De'Andre Pitts, Jawan McAllister, Jack Schnell and Nate Blakeney all have two.
  • Gilliam hit the team's first homer of the season on opening weekend against Maryland Eastern Shore.
  • Mitchell had the team's first multi-homer game after knocking out two solo shots against Gardner-Webb on March 16 in the first game of a doubleheader.
  • Longwood hit a home run in four straight from 4/20-4/26 for the first time this season. The previous mark was three straight games.
  • Eleven players have hit a home run for Longwood after Cullan Wadsworth swatted his first career homer on 4/26.
  • Longwood sits among the league leaders in the Big South in stolen base efficiency. The Lancers are successful 77.5% of the time after going 55-71 on stolen base attempts this season (fourth in total steals, fifth in attempts).
  • Jawan McAllister leads the Lancers and is tied for seventh in the Big South with 13 steals, and Antwaun Tucker are tied for ninth in the Big South with 12 stolen bases. Tucker is a perfect 12-12.
  • Tucker has only been caught stealing seven times in his Longwood career. The junior is 46-53 on steals as a Lancer.

  • Longwood is second in the Big South with 8.85 strikeouts per nine innings and 354 strikeouts.
  • Starter Tyler Morgan leads the Big South with 71 K's and 11.34 strikeouts per nine innings, and Nick Fuchs is right behind him with 10.68 K/9 and tied for 9th with 53 strikeouts.
  • Under head coach Ryan Mau, the Lancers have consistently ranked near the top of the Big South in strikeouts. In 2018, the Lancers were third with 468 K's. In 2017, Longwood led the Big South with 511 punchouts in 2017, breaking the school's D-I record of 440.  That season, Longwood was also third in the nation with 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings. The Lancers were fifth in the Big South in 2016 with 404 K's and third in 2015 with 440 K's. 
Last Time Out
  • Longwood lost a pitcher's duel 4-2 after Mike Esposito gave the team his best start of the season. The freshman went five innings and struck out seven, both tying career highs. USC Upstate plated three runs in the final three innings to break a 1-1 tie, and Longwood's rally came up short. 
Scouting VMI
  • Longwood and VMI meet for the 31st time in their shared history. The two teams began playing back in 1979. The two teams split last season, with each winning at the other's stadium. VMI won in Farmville 12-6, and Longwood took the second game 11-9 in Lexington. This season is the fourth straight year the two teams have played but the first time in that stretch they are only scheduled for one game.
  • VMI comes in after taking a two of three at Western Carolina over the weekend with both wins coming in extra innings. In game one, VMI won 15-11 in 11 innings before WCU took game two 14-5. VMI won game three 9-8 in 10 innings. VMI has played six extra-inning games this season.
  • As a team, VMI has hit 22 home runs and 81 doubles in 44 games while posting a team ERA of 6.54.
  • Callen Nuccio leads the offense with a .295 batting average and 30 runs scored while tying for the team lead with 13 doubles. He is one of three players with at least 10 doubles, with Josh Hollifield (13 doubles, .269 batting average) and Will Knight (11 doubles, .259 batting average) the other two. Jake Huggins has hit a team-high seven homers on the way to 35 RBI and joins Nuccio as the only two players to play and start all 44 games for VMI.
  • Out of the bullpen, Will Lopez has made a team-high 17 relief appearances and thrown 24.1 innings to put up a 6.29 ERA and a 4-0 record. He has 20 strikeouts to nine walks. Derek Trembley (16 relief appearances, 6.46 ERA, 0-3) and Michael Spence (13 relief appearances, 8.27 ERA, 0-3) have only pitched out of the bullpen as well.
  • Zak Kent is in the NCAA top five with 109 strikeouts across his 11 starts and 76.1 innings, and he has a team-low 4.13 ERA and 5-2 record. He is the only player besides Will Lopez to have a record above .500.
