FARMVILLE, Va. – Playing on her senior weekend, Longwood redshirt-senior
Karleigh Donovan lifted Longwood to a 4-3 walk-off win Sunday to take the series over Charleston Southern at Lancer Field.
The walk-off single from Donovan lifted Longwood (28-14, 14-2 Big South) to its 15th consecutive series win since the 2017 season, as it marked the eighth time in Big South play in which the Lancers came from behind after trailing in the game. Charleston Southern falls to 16-30 overall, 10-8 in Big South play.
Donovan's bloop single capped a two-run rally to answer Charleston Southern's go-ahead run from Annie Bakenhus in the top of the inning, as
Destiny Martinez brought home the game-tying run earlier in the inning to score
Chelsea Whitcomb.
"We did a good job of keeping our composure after they scored a run in the top of the seventh," said Longwood head coach
Kathy Riley. "It would've been easy in a game like today when we're not hitting it as well to get down and push too hard, but we did a nice job of staying calm and putting ourselves in position to win."
Martinez led Longwood at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring two runs and adding an RBI.
Alexis Wayland blasted a leadoff home run for the second day in a row while
Jordan Clark stretched her hitting streak to eight straight games, as Longwood combined for seven hits.
In her last nine games, Martinez is 8-for-21 with nine runs scored, one RBI, as the 2018 All-Big South second team performer has three multi-hit games in that stretch.
Sydney Backstrom (13-7) got the win in coming out of the bullpen to pitch 0.2 innings, after a strong outing from
Arleigh Wood who got a no decision. Wood tossed 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks on 65 pitches, 37 for strikes.
"It's nice to see Arleigh battle after we give up the first couple of runs," Riley said. "She pitched well all day today, keeping Charleston Southern off balance. I'm happy for Arleigh to be able to gain the confidence that she needs so that she can pitch the way that she knows how."
Holly Clark (5-10) took the loss in coming on and throwing 5.2 innings in relief, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. She came on for starter Arizona Pilgrim, who got the start and allowed one run on one hit in 1-plus innings.
Annie Bakenhus went 2-for-3 and drove in all three Charleston Southern runs, while Rhiana Hubbard went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Longwood will complete its series with Radford Wednesday, April 17 with a doubleheader at Radford Softball Stadium. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
"Radford is always a difficult team to face, especially at their place," Riley said. "I think they'll be prepared for the speed of the game and we just have to match the intensity of what the other team brings."
