RADFORD, Va. – Longwood scored two runs in the seventh inning two times on Wednesday, but the rally that won game one fell just short in game two. Longwood (29-15, 15-3 Big South)claimed a 3-2 win in game one thanks to an RBI double by
Alexis Wayland and an RBI single from
Jordan Clark, but Radford (19-27, 9-9 Big South) won game two 4-2 after Longwood's rally fell short.

Alexis Wayland drove in a pair of runs in the game one win while leading off the game with a homer for the fourth time this season while going 4-8 at the plate between the two games. Three of her four hits were extra-base hits.

Jordan Clark went 3-7 on the day and extended her hitting streak to 10 straight games. Plus, the senior has driven in a run in eight of her last 10 games after driving in the winning run in game one.

Sydney Gay pitched her fourth complete game of the season in game one to earn the win by throwing a four-hitter.

Longwood took two of three in the season series against Radford. The three-game series was spread out over almost a full week after Longwood won game one 4-0 on Thursday, April 11.

The Lancers host Hampton for a three-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 23-24. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 5 p.m.

RADFORD, Va. –A freshman tied the game, and a pair of seniors delivered the win for yet another comeback performance by Longwood softball. Freshman
Alexis Wayland roped an RBI double in the top of the seventh before senior
Jordan Clark lined home the go-ahead run. Pitcher
Sydney Gay closed it out in the circle to wrap up the 3-2 win in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

Down 2-1 in the top of the seventh,
Jenna Dunn smashed a pinch-hit single up the middle. After
Destiny Martinez stole second, Wayland crushed a ball just over Sydney Fisher's glove at short. As the ball rolled to the wall, Martinez raced home to tie the game.
Chelsea Whitcomb came in to pinch run and promptly stole third before Clark roped a line drive single to left field to put the Lancers up 3-2.

Gay (10-7) wrapped up her fourth complete game of the season in the bottom half of the seventh by forcing three popups around a two-out double. She threw a four-hitter and only gave up two runs, one earned, while walking two and striking out five. She threw 111 pitches, 75 of which were strikes.

At the start of the game, Wayland wasted no time and gave Longwood the lead on the first pitch by crushing a solo homer over the left field wall. She has hit a leadoff homer in three straight games and leads the team with eight this season. She finished the game 2-4 with two RBI and two extra-base hits.

Radford didn't record a hit until the fourth inning. After back-to-back singles and a groundout put runners at second and third. Hunter Mundy lined a single to left field to tie the game, an overthrow by Gay on a grounder up the middle scored the go-ahead run for Radford. Gay induced a double play ball one batter later to end the threat.

Kayla Huffman (9-13) took the loss in the circle for Radford. She surrendered three runs, all earned, on five hits and two walks in 6.1 innings. Fifty-six of her 93 pitches were for strikes.

Game 3: Radford 4, Longwood 2

Game two featured home runs by both teams, but Longwood's seventh-inning rally came up just short with the tying run on second. Radford swatted a pair of homers and took advantage of Longwood mistakes to take a 4-0 lead before
Sydney Jacobsen crushed her second homer of the season to key a two-out Lancer rally.

With Longwood down to its final out and a runner on first, Jacobsen clobbered a ball over the left field wall for a two-run home run that cut the lead to 4-2. Wayland, Clark and
Mason Basdikis all reached to load the bases, but
Karleigh Donovan flew out to left to end the game.

Radford took advantage of a Longwood mistake in the third to take the lead. With runners on first and second,
Kasey Carr fielded a grounder at short and sailed the throw to second to let the lead runner score.

A pair of homers gave Radford insurance. Sydney Fisher launched a two-run homer to right field after an error in left extended the fourth inning, and Talia Douglas swatted a home run to straightaway center in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.

Jessie Marvin (9-12) kept the Lancers off balance through six innings. She surrendered seven hits and walked a pair to give up two runs, both earned, while striking out one. She threw 69 of her 103 pitches for strikes.

Sydney Backstrom (13-8) took the loss despite only surrendering three hits. She struck out six in six innings while giving up four runs, two earned, and walked four. She threw 118 pitches with 64 strikes.
