Three-Point Onslaught Leads to Historic 30-Point Win Over Eastern Shore

Lancers Torch Hawks for Largest-Ever Win Over Division I Foe

FARMVILLE, Va. – Sitting just outside Longwood's locker room in bold white letters is the program's three-word mantra: "Let It Fly."

It's the last thing the Lancers see before they take the court, and Tuesday night they took that instruction to heart.

In a second straight shooting clinic in Willett Hall, Longwood (2-1) knocked down a season-high 13 three-pointers and cruised to a an 85-55 rout of Maryland Eastern Shore to open the season 2-0 at home for a second straight year under head coach Griff Aldrich. The 30-point win was Longwood's largest margin of victory over a Division I foe since the Lancers made the jump to that level in 2004-05 and only the ninth win of at least 30 points during that 16-year span.

"They ran our offense, and they shared the ball really well," Aldrich said. "Not just threes, but there were a bunch of times like Jordan [Cintron]'s bank shot where the ball was moving, and it was very unselfish. It's hard to guard when the ball's moving like that.

"That's really special about this team. When you have guys who are willing to move the ball and don't care who's scoring and just want to win, that makes a big difference."

Led by a career-high 17 points from sophomore newcomer Christian Wilson, Longwood's unselfishness offense was on full display from the opening minutes as the Lancers shot a blistering 11-of-14 from three-point range in the first half and assisted on 10 of those buckets. Wilson was a perfect 4-of-4 during that stretch, while senior guard Sean Flood was 3-of-3 to propel the Lancers' to a 50-point half that was their largest single-half scoring outburst in nearly two years.

Longwood finished 14-of-22 from beyond the arc with Wilson – as part of his career-high scoring night just three games into his Division I career – hitting the last of those on Longwood's final possession.

"I think the best part about tonight, and the three games we have played, is how hype we get for each other," said Wilson, who has led Longwood in scoring in two of his first three games.

"It's good hitting five threes, but the excitement I see from my teammates when I hit a shot is the best feeling—they keep me going. I think that camaraderie in the locker room can take us very far, on and off the court."

There were plenty of celebrations to go around as seven different Lancers hit a three-pointer, including senior guard Jaylon Wilson who spearheaded the long-range flurry by carving up the Hawks' defense with repeated knifing drives through the lane. He finished with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting and amassed a game-high plus-minus rating of 37 points in his 25 minutes on the floor.

"We were just getting the ball moving and attacking, and everything opened up," said Jaylon Wilson, who has now scored in double figures in 11 of his past 14 games. "We found open threes, and we knocked them down. I feel like everyone on the court can shoot, one through five. It really opens the game up for everybody."

Through three games this season, Longwood has continued its emphasis on perimeter shooting that last season led the Lancers to hit a program-record 333 three-pointers. More than 40 percent of the team's field goal attempts have come from beyond the arc this season, while nearly 60 percent of their assists have produced three-pointers.

Maryland Eastern Shore bore the brunt of that attack in the first half when the Lancers hit six consecutive treys to balloon their lead to 17 points at the under-six-minute mark. Wilson hit three straight during that stretch while assisting on another to Flood, who also joined the scoring party and posted his first double-digit scoring game of the season with 14 points.

Longwood was equally dominant on the perimeter defensively, holding Maryland Eastern Shore to .200 (5-of-25) shooting from three-point range and .382 (21-of-55) from the field for the game. Led by three steals from redshirt sophomore guard Juan Munoz in his first career start, Longwood swiped the ball eight times and scored 14 points off of 15 Eastern Shore turnovers.

The win comes in the first of three consecutive home games in a gauntlet of a week for the Lancers, who will play four games in a span of seven days. The next two of those take place in Willett Hall this Thursday and Friday with Saint Francis (Brooklyn) making the trip for a 6 p.m. tipoff Thursday and Randolph following for a 7 p.m. tipoff Friday. That packed stretch concludes when Longwood heads to Northern Illinois the following Monday.
