LYNCHBURG, Va. – Hat tricks from Abby Britton, Jenna Joyal and Hannah Quast and stingy defense led Liberty past the Longwood women's lacrosse team 22-7 Wednesday afternoon, spoiling a record-setting day for senior attacker
Riley Dolan.
In the loss, Dolan set the program's all-time single-season assists record of 52, surpassing the previous high of 51 held by former great
Lauren Prasnicki. The senior from Northfield, N.J. has a chance to put some cushion on her newly gained record as the Lancers still have three regular season games and the Big South tournament on their slate.
Entering the day as the nation's best at forcing opponent turnovers, Liberty (10-4, 3-1 Big South) was responsible for 14 of the 16 Lancer turnovers to slow down the Longwood (6-8, 1-3 Big South) attack enough, despite a three-goal afternoon from
Kaitlin Luccarelli and a season-high 10 draw controls from
Molly Barkman.
"Losses like this are always tough to swallow. It's clear we didn't play our best and Liberty did what they needed to do in jumping on us early and putting us in a hole that was too big to dig out of today," said sixth-year head coach
Elaine Jones.
Liberty jumped out to an early 5-0 lead just four minutes into the contest and used 16 Lancer turnovers to stay ahead the rest of the way as 13 different Flames found the back of the net.
Dolan's three-assist afternoon is just the latest of a six-game stretch that has seen the senior attacker dish out 34 including an eight-assist performance at East Carolina.
A sophomore from Fairfax, Va., Luccarelli added three more goals pushing her team lead to 36 on the season, 12 more than Dolan's 24 tallies.
Dolan's 24 goals and 52 assists now position her just outside the top five for most points in a single season behind Prasnicki's 77 in the 2013 season. Luccarelli sits second in points with 41 while Barkman has 35 on 23 goals and 12 helpers.
Joining Luccarelli in the scoring column were
Lexi Davis – who scored two goals, Barkman, and freshman
Emma Johnson – who scored her third collegiate goal. Luccarelli also added an assist to lead the team in points with four Wednesday.
The trio of sophomore in Davis,
Dana Joss and
Olivia Zubillaga each picked up two ground balls while Barkman, Dolan and
Hollyn Royster each corralled one.
In the net, senior captain and goalkeeper
Imani West collected nine saves across 55 minutes with five coming in the second half. West also collected a team-high three ground balls as she also moved closer to a single season program record with her 57 ground balls – good for second behind
Hannah Riggs' 61 in the 2012 season.
Longwood returns to action Saturday as they host Presbyterian looking for a bounce back win. First draw between the Lancers and Blue Hose is set to go up at 1 p.m. from Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field.
"We have two days to prepare for our next opponent so we will get back after it tomorrow," Jones said.
