Lancer Comeback Bid Falls Shy To Tribe

William & Mary Run Keys 15-9 Midweek Win Over Longwood

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –
In their first matchup since the 2015 season, William & Mary used a seven-goal run in the closing stages of the first half to upend the Longwood women's lacrosse team 15-9 Tuesday afternoon.

Led by a four-goal performance from Maddie Torgerson, the Tribe overcame a hat trick by senior attacker Charleigh Kondas and another double-digit save afternoon for senior goalkeeper Imani West for the midweek win.

Tuesday's loss was the second contest in four days for the Lancers and second straight on the road while the Tribe were coming off a nine-day layoff.

After falling behind on Eloise Gagnon's first goal of the day, Longwood stormed back for a 3-1 lead behind goals from Lexi Davis, Kaitlin Luccarelli and Madison Stair's team-leading ninth goal of the season. The lead was short-lived as the Tribe answered with a five-goal spurt before another seven-tally stretch and 12-4 halftime margin.

"The team came out with a lot more energy and fire than they had for the last game, which was nice," said sixth-year head coach Elaine Jones. "Unfortunately, due to a combination of our own mistakes and William & Mary's attackers capitalizing on those mistakes, we once again dug ourselves a hole and allowed them to get a big lead on us in the first half."

Between the pipes, West collected her fourth-consecutive double digit save performance dating back to last season. Through three games in 2018, West has 36 saves including a season-best 14 at George Washington on Saturday.

Kondas' hat trick led a Lancer offense that also saw goals from Stair, Riley Dolan, Davis and Luccarelli while freshman midfielder Hannah Tirrell scored her first collegiate goal in the second half.

"We need to find a way to build on and sustain our momentum," Jones said. "I thought the second half was much better defensively, as we held them to only three goals."

In that second half comeback effort the Lancers outscored the Tribe 5-3 but were unable to muster enough goals down the stretch.

"We need our offense to be consistent and we need to take care of the ball better," Jones said. "If we can do that, we'll be much more successful in keeping the score closer and giving us the opportunity to win the game."

As a squad, the Lancers sent 12 of their 19 shots on goal while grabbing 20 ground balls and causing 11 Tribe turnovers.

Longwood caps their three-game road swing Saturday with another trip to a Commonwealth foe, this time at George Mason. First draw between the Lancers and Patriots goes up at 2 p.m. in Fairfax, Va.
