WASHINGTON, D.C. – Led by five multi-goal performances, including three hat tricks, George Washington was able to use a six-goal run in the early stages to upend the Longwood women's lacrosse team 16-8 Saturday in the nation's capital.
Longwood senior captains
Madison Stair and
Imani West had season-high performances Saturday, but Stair's four goals and West's 14 saves weren't enough to overcome an early deficit as Longwood (1-1) fell on the road for its first loss of the season.
"We ran into a tough George Washington team who shot the ball well in their home opener," said sixth-year head coach
Elaine Jones, who led Longwood to a 13-12 win over Lafayette in the season opener on Feb. 11. "They got the jump on us early in the first half, and we simply dug ourselves a hole that was too deep to climb out of in the second half."
Stair and West did their best to pull Longwood out of that hole, as Stair scored four goals for the second straight game and West racked up a career high in saves.
"Imani [West] was a bright spot for us in goal as she had an amazing game, and her saves gave us a chance to get the ball back on offense," Jones said. "Unfortunately, we just couldn't get things going."
After Stair tied the contest at 1-1 just two minutes in, the Colonials used a six-goal run to create separation with a 7-1 lead before taking a 10-3 advantage into the break.
Longwood saw goals from
Molly Barkman, who finished with two,
Riley Dolan and
Lexi Davis. Davis, Dolan and
Dana Joss dished out assists on the Lancers' eight goals.
"This was a good game that showed us certain areas and skills we need to continue to improve on," Jones said. "We always learn lessons from every game, win or lose, so we just need to take the lessons learned from today and apply them for the next game and as the season progresses."
George Washington was led by the trio of Jocelyn Donahue, Camaryn Kerns and Katie Quinn as each had a hat trick and combined for nine of the 16 goals. Carolina Kiernan and Aidan Cage added two goals each while Brooke Sands, Ioanna Mantzouratos and Christine Weber all added a goal.
Cage, who scored a first-half goal, added a game-high six assists as the Colonials had 11 assists on 16 tallies.
Longwood stays on the road as they'll have a quick turnaround with a trip to Commonwealth rival William & Mary Tuesday afternoon followed by a trip to George Mason on Saturday.
First draw between the Lancers and Tribe goes up at 3 p.m. from Williamsburg, Va.
