Red-Hot Osinski Named to NECBL All-Star Team

Lancer Shortstop Earns Starting Nod in Summer League All-Star Classic

MONTPELIER, Vt. – Following a strong first half to his summer campaign, Longwood shortstop Michael Osinski was named to the 2016 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) All-Star Team, the summer collegiate league announced Sunday.

Osinski, who started every game at shortstop for the Big South's third-place Lancers in 2016, will start at the same position for the North Division squad in the July 17 NECBL All-Star Game. First pitch for the summer showcase is slated for a 6:35 p.m. at Cardines Field, home of the NECBL's Newport Gulls in Newport, R.I.

The all-star appointment follows a torrid summer for Vestal, N.Y., native, who is hitting .333 with 28 hits, 12 runs and six RBI for the NECBL's Vermont Mountaineers. He ranks eighth in the league in batting average and seventh in hits while batting in the middle of the Vermont lineup.

Osinski's summer surge has extended a breakout sophomore campaign in which he hit .305 with 17 doubles, 35 RBI, 38 runs and eight stolen bases for a Longwood team that reached 30 wins for the first time in the Division I era and earned a program-best No. 3 seed in the Big South Championship. A two-year starter at shortstop, Osinski ended 2016 on a tear, hitting .435 (27-for-62) with 15 RBI in 13 games in May. He had a pair of four-hit performances during that end-of-season stretch, including a 4-for-6, four-run, four-RBI showing in Longwood's 18-13 Big South Tournament win over High Point.

The 6-2, 185-pound rising junior will join an NECBL North Division starting nine that includes standouts from Virginia, Michigan and Maryland. He will be one of two Big South representatives in the all-star game, joining fellow Vermont teammate and UNC Asheville outfielder Joe Tietjen, who was the North Division's coach's selection.

Osinski will be one of six position starters returning to Longwood head coach Ryan Mau's 2016-17 squad and one of the team's most experienced with 110 starts over his first two seasons. He is a career .293 hitter with a .364 on base percentage, 123 hits, 60 runs, 24 doubles, four home runs and 69 RBI.
