Undefeated CSU Makes Longwood Latest Victim

Shorthanded Lancers Fall 7-0 to Big South Preseason No. 3

FARMVILLE, Va. – Big South preseason No. 3 Charleston Southern stayed unbeaten, riding four straight-sets singles wins to a 7-0 victory over Longwood Saturday afternoon at the Lancer Courts.

Charleston Southern (4-0, 2-0 Big South), which received two first-place votes and was one point shy of a second-place preseason prediction in the Big South coaches poll, took advantage of a shorthanded Longwood singles lineup to sweep their second straight conference match after taking down Radford 7-0 on March 1.

The Lancers (4-5, 1-1 Big South) were without singles ace Fallon Burger, who suffered an injury in the doubles round and did not compete in singles play. Her absence bumped Longwood's remaining five singles players up one spot in the rotation against a Buccaneer sextet that was a combined 13-4 entering Saturday.

The Buccaneers took four of those bouts in straight sets and have now surrendered just one point in their past six matches.

Anna Pelak and Paloma Alatorre picked up Longwood's lone win on the day, taking down the Charleston Southern doubles duo of Kimberley Koerner and Brianna Thompson 7-5 to block a doubles sweep. That loss was the first of the spring for any Charleston Southern doubles duo.

"Not often will a coach be pleased with an 0-7 result, but today's match showed me how much better we were than last year," said Longwood's second-year head coach, Bruce Myers.

"With our No. 1 injured and not playing singles, we came within a tiebreaker of taking the doubles point and lost two three-set matches. This was with everyone having to play up a spot due to Fallon's injury. I'm proud of where we are at this point in the season and very much looking forward to playing and training over spring break."

Pelak nearly went 2-0 on the day while playing as Longwood's newly appointed ace, taking Charleston Southern No. 1 Nicolin Luecke three sets before falling 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 to the Herne, Germany, native. Luecke, who improved to 3-1 on the season, ran her career Big South record to 10-1 with the win.

Lancer senior Maria Coronel also took her singles bout three sets, but eventually fell 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 to Koerner at the No. 5 singles slot.

Longwood will continue a full weekend of play Sunday with a trip to Lewes, Del., where they will face Delaware State and Goldey-Beacon College in the Hornet Tennis Class in Memory of Kiki Lopez. That late addition to the schedule begins Sunday at 1 p.m.
