Lancers Dominant against UNC Asheville at Mountaineer Hidden Dual

Longwood takes eight singles matches against Bulldogs Sunday

BOONE, N.C. — The Longwood women's tennis team finished the Mountaineer Hidden Dual with a commanding performance against UNC Asheville on Sunday, winning eight of nine singles matches at App State's Jones Outdoor Tennis Complex.

The Lancers completed the three-day event with a strong showing against competition from the host Mountaineers, Eastern Kentucky, Queens and Asheville.

Longwood's final day was highlighted by eight singles victories against the Big South Conference rival Bulldogs. Feline van Eijkelenburg opened the day with a three-set victory over Srinidhi Madhu, 5-7, 6-1, 11-9, while Hima Fernando defeated Lauren Chutka, 7-5, 6-1.

Asem Shoybek also won in three sets, defeating Victoria Lopez Ocampos, 6-1, 1-6, 10-4. Asta Miettinen followed with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory over Maria sol Alvarez.

Farah Asaad added a 6-3, 6-4 win over Isabella Moss, and Alexandra Magia defeated Audrey Gregg, 6-1, 6-3.

Maddie Fowler rallied past Madison McLeod, 1-6, 7-6 (7), 10-8, while Genevieve Dickey posted a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Chloe Collins. Asheville's Brooke Bibee denied the Lancers a singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-1 win versus Ally Hopkins.

Longwood also swept its three doubles matches against the Bulldogs on Saturday. The pair of van Eijkelenburg and Magia won 6-0 and Asaad and Miettinen prevailed 7-6 (3) and Fernando and Shoybek posted another 6-0 victory.

The Lancers also recorded singles victories earlier in the weekend against Eastern Kentucky and Queens, with van Eijkelenburg, Fernando, Asaad and Dickey among those earning wins. Longwood's doubles teams of van Eijkelenburg and Magia, and Dickey and Fowler, also picked up victories against the combined EKU/Queens contingent.

In all, the Lancers collected 13 singles wins and five doubles victories on the weekend and are now 29-16 (.644) overall in singles and 10-9 (.526) in doubles through two fall events.

Longwood is back in action Oct. 15-18 in the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship at the Liberty Tennis Complex.
