Lancers Outshine Mary Washington In Home Opener

Longwood Took Five Of Six Singles Matches For First Spring Win

FARMVILLE, Va. – Playing in their home opener, the Lancers saw four players pick up their first singles wins of the spring season to give the Longwood women's tennis team a 5-2 victory over Mary Washington Thursday afternoon at Lancer Courts.

The Lancers (3-4) clinched their first match victory of the spring after senior Paloma Alatorre picked up a hard-earned singles win, her first this spring, to give the Lancers their fourth straight decision on the day. Alatorre defeated Mary Washington's Chrissy Gaul 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 in No. 4 singles to seal Longwood's fate.

After Mary Washington clinched the doubles point win and the first singles win of the day, junior Mason Thomas opened singles play with Longwood's first win in the match. Thomas nearly rolled to a two-set sweep, settling for a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Mary Washington's Taylor Diffley at the No. 5 flight for her first win in the early spring season.

In the next singles finish, the Lancers took a 2-1 lead following a win from Anna Pelak in No. 2 singles. Pelak earned her second win this spring as the junior beat Mary Washington's Carolina Mosberg 6-1, 6-4 to bring the match to a 2-2 tie.

At the No. 1 flight, Longwood freshman Fallon Burger notched her first career singles win in a tight, two-set battle with Mary Washington's Shelby Harris. Burger's victory over Harris 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, allowed the Lancers to take control of the match.

Mary Washington swept Longwood in the day's three doubles matches to take the doubles point. The Eagle duo of Mackenzie Smith battled to earn a 7-5 win against the Lancer pairing of Pelak and Thomas in the No. 2 doubles match, which secured the point.

Senior Maria Coronel ended a spectacular afternoon for the blue and white with her decisive 6-3, 6-0, victory against Mary Washington's Smith at the No. 6 singles position. The win was also the first of the 2016 calendar year for Coronel.

Longwood will have two days to rest before returning for the second of five consecutive home matches against Washington Lee Sunday, Feb. 21. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at Lancer Courts.
