FARMVILLE, Va. – Sara McBride mounted a three-set win in singles play to cap Presbyterian's 4-3 come-from-behind victory against Longwood Saturday afternoon at Lancer Courts.
Â
McBride's win, a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 comeback over
Paloma Alatorre at No. 4 singles, capped three straight singles wins for the Blue Hose, who rallied from a 3-1 deficit to spoil Longwood' senior day festivities and overcome singles wins from Lancer seniors
Malin Allgurin and
Nicole Parker.
Â
Longwood (8-12) stormed out to a 3-1 lead at the start of singles play behind those wins from Allgurin and Parker, as well as No. 5
Mason Thomas. All three of those wins came in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-1 win for the senior Allgurin at No. 1, and a 6-2, 6-0 win for fellow senior Parker at No. 6.
The celebration of those two Lancer seniors took a sharp turn shortly after Thomas' win, however, as Presbyterian's C.M. Andrews responded with a 6-1, 6-7 (4-6), 6-3 win over
Anna Pelak to jumpstart three straight Blue Hose victories. Caroline deLoach followed with a comeback 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over
Maria Coronel at No. 3 to tie the score at 3-3, before McBride edged Alatorre 7-6 (7-5) in set two and pulled away to clinch the match with a 6-0 win in set three.
Â
"This was a tough match, an emotional day for the seniors who played superb," Longwood head coach
Bruce Myers said. "We had a chance and thought that Paloma won her match, which would have clinched our fourth point but there was a scoring discrepancy between the players, and the result didn't favor us. It was unfortunate because Paloma battled her tail off and she thought she won the match, as did I.
Â
"The bottom line is it just seemed like one of those days that nothing fell our way. To be honest, we didn't play well enough to create the opportunities needed to win this match."
Â
The loss is Longwood's second straight at home and comes after the Lancers opened their home schedule with four straight victories. With two home matches remaining as part of the current six-match homestand, the Lancers will take on Delaware and N.C. Central next Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
