FARMVILLE, Va. – Head coach
Catherine Hanson and the Longwood cross country program will host the second annual Longwood/adidas Cross County Invitational at the Longwood Golf Course this Friday, Sept. 19, beginning at 4 p.m.
The Lancers will renew the event after a seven-year hiatus following its 2007 debut. The 5,000-meter race traverses the Longwood Golf Course next to the Athletics Complex and will feature racing from men's and women's programs.
The men's programs from Longwood, Hampden-Sydney, Richmond and VCU kick off the event at 4 p.m. followed by the start of the women's teams from Longwood, James Madison, Richmond and VCU at 4:45 p.m.
Leading the charge for the Lancer men will be
Nick Reed, a senior who clocked a team-best and personal-best 26:07.40 in Longwood's season-opening trip to the James Madison University Open Invitational. He was one of three Lancer men with top-40 finishes, leading sophomore
Robert Willis (32nd, 26:28.90) and fellow senior
Russell Reed (40th, 26:57.50).
On the women's side, sophomore Grace Piekarski was Longwood's top runner at JMU by nearly a full minute, clocking a team-best 21:49.70 in the season-opening meet. The Longwood women's roster also boasts four seniors who will get the opportunity to race in front of a hometown crowd for the first time in their careers Friday.
