Early Hole Too Deep For Longwood to Overcome

Lancers Fall 2-0 at Old Dominion

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion put Longwood in a hole early and rode that lead to a 2-0 win over the Lancers Tuesday evening at the ODU Soccer Complex.

The Monarchs (3-2) managed just four shots on goal but made them count, delivering their first score just 8:33 into the game on a Josue Henriquez breakaway and then again in the 36th minute on a scramble in front of the net off the save.

Longwood pounded 11 shots toward the Lancer net, but only three were on the mark and all of those were met with by the staunch goalkeeping of Old Dominion's Alex Tiesenhausen. Tisesenhausen also helped to spoil Longwood's three corner kicks, forcing the Lancers away empty-handed on the way to his third shutout in Old Dominion's five games.

"While there's no embarrassment losing to a quality opponent in ODU, I felt we gave as good as we got and were undone with a combination of some ability from ODU and some naivete on our part early in the game," head coach Jon Atkinson said. "Getting out of a hole is not easy, but to credit our lads, they gave a great account of themselves in the second half and were unlucky not to get something out of the game."

Longwood (1-3-1) bounced back after the second goal to weather 11 more shots and shut out the Monarchs over the final 54 minutes, but Tiesenhausen was equally effective in preserving Old Dominion's two-goal lead. He batted away two second-half shots from freshman Stephen Hoogland, who has found himself immediately thrust into a featured role in the offense while averaging 89 minutes over his past two games. Unfortunately, Hoogland came away empty-handed against the Monarchs  despite attempting a team-high three shots.

"I feel this team is coming together and with a touch more urgency in our play, we will be a program to reckon with in the near future."

The Lancers get the opportunity to develop that urgency next Tuesday in a road matchup at Navy. Longwood then returns home on Sept. 30 against George Washington before beginning Big South play.
