Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DURHAM, N.C. -- Senior captain Alex Owens/Purcellville and junior Travis Biddix/Richmond each had one hit and one RBI, and junior Aaron Myers/Newport News gained the pitching victory, to lead Longwood University to a 2-1 non-conference win at Duke University of the Atlantic Coast Conference in the nightcap for a doubleheader split on Sunday in Durham, North Carolina.  The Blue Devils (29-18) won the opener, 10-4, against the visiting Lancers (20-26) behind two hits and two RBIs each from Andy Perez and Chris Marconcini.  Longwood will play the two-day, three-game series finale against Duke at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Monday, May 5 at 4 p.m.

In game two, Duke took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Mark Lumpa (1-2) drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a one-out single by Jordan Betts (1-4), before scoring with two outs on an RBI single from Aaron Cohn (3-4, RBI).

Longwood scored two runs in the sixth to take a 2-1 advantage that stood behind the pitching of Myers and company.  Senior captain Matt Dickason/Chesapeake (2-4) and sophomore C.J. Roth/Yorktown (1-4) each singled with one out, and Dickason scored on a two-out, RBI single up the middle by Biddix (1-1, RBI), who was pinch hitting.  Roth crossed the plate on an RBI double to right field from Owens (1-4, RBI), but a fly ball out left the other two runners stranded.

Myers (7-3) started for Longwood and pitched the first 6.0 innings for the win, scattering six hits and the one earned run with two strikeouts and one walk.  Senior Scott Burkett/Williamsburg tossed a scoreless seventh inning, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and one walk.  Freshman Mitchell Kuebbing/Burlington, Kentucky (3) went the final 2.0 shutout innings for the Lancers to earn the save, allowing no hits with three strikeouts and two walks, but not without some excitement in the ninth inning.  Duke's leadoff batter reached on an error in right field and advanced to third on the play, before a walk to the next batter had runners at the corners with no outs.  Kuebbing, though, closed with three consecutive strikeouts … swinging, looking and swinging … for the win and the doubleheader split.

Michael Matuella (5-3) started for Duke and pitched the first 6.2 innings for the tough-luck loss, allowing six hits and the two earned runs with 12 strikeouts and no walks.

In game one, Longwood put the first run on the board in the third inning to lead 1-0.  Owens (1-3, RBI) doubled down the right field line to open the at bat, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out, RBI double by sophomore Colton Konvicka/Richmond (1-3, RBI).

Duke scored again in the sixth, as well, plating five runs to secure the outcome.  Betts was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI triple by Marconcini, who scored courtesy an error at shortstop.  Ryan Deitrich (1-3, 2 RBIs) added a two-run double to drive in Matt Berezo (1-2), who had also doubled, and Mike Rosenfeld (2-3), who had singled.  An RBI single from Perez plated Koplove, who had reached on a single.

Longwood added a pair of runs in the ninth inning for the final six-run margin.  Burkett (0-3) walked to open the inning, followed by another walk to freshman pinch-hitter Keith Roberts/Midlothian (0-0) and both runners advanced on a wild pitch.  Owens plated Burkett with a sacrifice fly RBI, while Roberts scored on another wild pitch.

Junior Brandon Vick/Newport News (4-6) started for Longwood and pitched the first 4.0 innings for the loss, allowing nine hits and four earned runs with five strikeouts and no walks.  Senior Ryan Schubert/Springfield tossed two-thirds of an inning for the Lancers, yielding one hit and one earned run with no strikeouts and two walks.  Freshman Luke Simpson/Danville went the final 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and five runs, four earned, with one strikeout and two walks.
