FARMVILLE, Va. -- Sophomore
Kyri Washington/Prospect had two doubles and three RBIs, and senior captain
Matt Dickason/Chesapeake and freshman
Mac McCafferty/Stevens, Pennsylvania each had two hits, as well, to lead Longwood University to a 10-7 Big South Conference baseball win past Presbyterian College on Sunday at Bolding Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (19-25, 8-13) scored eight runs in the first inning against visiting Blue Hose (14-28-1, 6-15) toward the series win (2-1), while sophomore
Travis Burnette/Lynchburg gained the pitching victory with 7.0 solid innings. Longwood is idle for semester exams this week before a non-conference road series at Duke University of the Atlantic Coast Conference on May 4-5 in Durham, North Carolina.
Longwood took the early 8-0 advantage and never looked back. Dickason (2-5, RBI) started it with a single to right field and moved to second when sophomore
C.J. Roth/Yorktown (1-4) drew a four-pitch walk. Junior
Brandon Delk/Newport News (0-3) followed with a fielder's choice ground ball to shortstop that looked like at least a force out at second, but was thrown over the second baseman's head, allowing Dickason to score and Roth to advance to third. Washington (2-4, 3 RBIs) followed with a fielder's choice RBI that scored Roth, and senior captain
Alex Owens/Purcellville (1-4) added a single to center that moved Washington to second. Freshman
Alex Lewis/Burke (1-3, RBI) laced a single to right that plated Washington, before senior
Cory Ramsey/Petersburg (1-3) walked to load the bases. McCafferty (2-4, RBI) promptly hit an RBI single to center to score Owens, and classmate
Brandon Harvell/Yorktown (1-4, RBI) followed with an RBI single to right field to plate Lewis, and after a misplay of the ball by the outfielder, both Ramsey and McCafferty also crossed the plate with Harvell advancing to third. An RBI ground ball to first by Dickason allowed Harvell to score the eighth run during the opening at bat.
Presbyterian scored a run in the fifth inning to make it 8-1. Weston Jackson (2-4) and Jacob Midkiff (4-4, 2 RBIs) each singled to open the inning, and advanced a base each on a sacrifice bunt from Glen Casaceli (1-3). An RBI ground ball to second by Tyler Weyenberg (0-4, 2 RBIs) allowed Jackson to cross the plate.
Longwood added two more runs in the sixth inning to lead 10-1. Dickason singled and stole second base, before a two-out walk to Delk. Washington promptly hit a two-run double to right center field to plate both Dickason and Delk.
The Blue Hose managed another run in the seventh inning to make it 10-2. Brandon Paul (1-4) doubled down the left field line to open the frame, moved to third on a ground ball by Jackson and scored on an infield single to the hole at shortstop from Midkiff. PC added five more runs against three Lancer pitchers in the ninth inning for the final three-run margin, the big hit being a two-run single down the left field line by Jay Lizanich (1-5, 2 RBIs).
Burnette (2-4) started for Longwood and pitched the first 7.0 innings for the win, yielding six hits and two earned runs with one strikeout and no walks. Freshman
Devin Gould/Fairfax Station earned his first collegiate save with the final out of the contest via a strikeout swinging with runners at second and third.
Aaron Lesiak (1-5) started for Presbyterian and went the first 5.2 innings for the loss, allowing 11 hits and 10 runs, six earned, with two strikeouts and four walks.
Longwood and Presbyterian have now met six times and the Lancers lead the all-time series, 4-2.
