Aaron Myers/Newport News pitched a complete-game victory, to lead Longwood University to a 4-1 Big South Conference baseball win past Presbyterian College on Friday night at Bolding Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (18-24, 7-12) won their fourth-straight game, their longest winning streak this season, against the visiting Blue Hose (13-27-1, 5-14) in the opening game of the three-game weekend series. Longwood and Presbyterian will play again on Saturday afternoon, April 26 at 4 p.m. in Farmville.
Longwood and Presbyterian played scoreless through three innings before each team scored in the fourth inning. The Blue Hose took a 1-0 lead after Brad Zebedis (0-4) reached on a throwing error from third base and crossed the plate unearned on an RBI single to right center field by Jay Lizanich (2-4, RBI). C.J. Roth/Yorktown (1-4) doubled to left center, moved to third on a fly ball from junior
Brandon Delk/Newport News (1-4, RBI) and scored on an RBI double to left by sophomore
Kyri Washington/Prospect (1-4, RBI). Washington crossed the plate via a two-out, RBI single to right center from Owens (1-4, RBI) that proved the game-winner.
Longwood added another run in the fifth inning to lead 3-1. Konvicka (2-4) singled with one out to left field, while batting from the left side of the plate for the first game (and second pate appearance) in his collegiate career, stole second base and scored on an RBI single to center from Delk with two outs. The Lancers made it 4-1 with a run in the sixth inning, getting a two-out, RBI double to left center from freshman
Brandon Harvell/Yorktown (1-3, RBI) that plated Owens, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Myers (6-3) took care of the rest for Longwood to earn the mound win, scattering seven hits and one unearned run with seven strikeouts and one walk. He retired the last eight batters he faced, including three via strikeouts, and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning with a strikeout swinging.
Trey Harris (0-3) pitched 5.2 innings for Presbyterian in relief of starter Beau Dees, who left after retiring the only batter he faced, allowing nine hits and four runs, three earned, with four strikeouts and no walks.
