Longwood Wins Finale 3-0 To Take Series At VMI

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior Brandon Delk/Newport News hit a two-run home run, and classmate Aaron Myers/Newport News pitched 8.0 scoreless innings, to lead Longwood University to a 3-0 Big South Conference North Division baseball victory at VMI on Saturday afternoon in Lexington.  The visiting Lancers (16-24, 6-12 Big South) won their second-straight game to earn the weekend series win against the host Keydets (21-16, 9-9 Big South).  Longwood will play a non-conference game against visiting North Carolina Central University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Wednesday, April 23 at 6 p.m. at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.

Longwood and VMI battled scoreless through five innings, as Myers and Andrew Woods engaged in an old-fashioned pitching duel.  The Lancers finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning with two runs to lead 2-0.  Sophomore C.J. Roth/Yorktown (2-5, RBI) singled to open the frame and crossed the plate ahead of Delk (1-4, 2 RBIs), who hit the two-run home run to left field on the first pitched he faced from Woods.  It was the team-best eighth homer of the season for Delk, matching his two-year total prior to this year, as he now has 16 career home runs.

Longwood added an insurance run in the seventh inning for the final three-run margin.  Sophomore Colton Konvicka/Richmond (1-5) reached on an infield single to shortstop, stole second base and scored on an RBI single through the right side by Roth.

Myers (5-3) took care of the rest as he started for Longwood and pitched the first 8.0 scoreless innings for the mound win, scattering six hits with five strikeouts and one walk, after earning a save with an inning of work on Friday night.  Senior Scott Burkett/Williamsburg (1) tossed the final 1.0 shutout inning for the Lancers to gain his first career save, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks.  Burkett (2-4) also had two hits at the plate, including a double.

Woods (5-2) started for VMI and went the first 5.1 innings to take the loss, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts and two walks.  The Keydets used four other pitchers in the relief.

Longwood and VMI have now met 24 times since 1979 and the Keydets still lead the all-time series, 14-10.
