Aaron Myers/Newport News pitched 5.2 solid innings to garner the pitching win for the visiting Lancers (13-14, 3-4 Big South) against the host Highlanders (14-10, 5-2 Big South) in the opening game of the three-game league series.
SUNDAY (March 30) UPDATE: Longwood and Radford were rained out on Sunday, March 30 and are now scheduled to play a doubleheader on Monday, March 31 at 1 p.m. in Radford.
Longwood took an early 1-0 advantage in the first inning, as Washington (2-3, RBI) singled with one out, stole second base, and scored on an RBI double to left center field by Owens (2-4, 2 RBI).
Radford also scored in the first to tie it at 1-1, getting a sacrifice fly RBI from Josh Gardiner (0-2, RBI) to plate Aaron Scoville (1-4), who had been hit by a pitch to reach base, before advancing to third on a fielding error at second base.
Longwood went back in front, 2-1, with a run in the third inning via a solo home run to right field by Owens with two outs, his fourth homer this season. The Lancers made it 3-1 with another run in the fifth inning, as sophomore
Travis Burnette/Lynchburg (0-4) reached on a fielding error at third base and scored on an RBI double by senior captain

Radford pulled to within 3-2 with a run in the fifth, as well, courtesy a solo homer from Chris Coia (1-3, RBI) to open the at-bat.
Longwood added an insurance run in the seventh inning to lead 4-2, following a two-out, solo home run to center field by Washington for his fifth homer this season to tie for the team lead.
Myers (4-1) started for Longwood and pitched the first 5.2 innings to gain the win, scattering two hits and two earned with three strikeouts and four walks. Senior
Scott Burkett/Williamsburg, who had two hits in the game as the designated hitter (2-4), pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Lancers, yielding just one hit with no strikeouts and no walks. Freshman
Mitchell Kuebbing/Burlington, Kentucky (1) pitched the final 2.0 shutout innings to earn his first collegiate save; retiring all six batters he faced with no strikeouts and no walks.
Dylan Nelson (4-1) started for Radford and pitched the first 4.0 innings for the loss, allowing seven hits and three runs, two earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.
