Longwood Travels To Radford For Big South Series

Lancers and fellow North Division Highlanders to play three-game Big South Conference series

FARMVILLE, Va. –
Longwood University will play its first three-game Big South Conference road series of the season on March 29-31 at fellow North Division and in-state opponent Radford University in Radford.  The Lancers enter their third league series with a record of 12-14 overall, 2-4 in the Big South, and are scheduled to play the Highlanders (14-9, 5-1 Big South) on Saturday at 4 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m. and Monday at 5:30 p.m.

The Head Coach
Brian McCullough has an overall record of 12-14 in his first season as mentor of the tradition-rich program.  A former starting pitcher and team captain for the Lancers, he served the past four years as an assistant coach, most-recently as the program's recruiting coordinator and pitching coach, while also assisting with all baseball operations, including scheduling.  McCullough compiled a career record of 20-14 with a 3.56 earned run average over 329.0 innings with 258 strikeouts and four saves at Longwood (2004-07), and the innings pitched and strikeouts remain school records.  He was the 2007 Division I Independent Pitcher of the Year and an All-Independent First Team selection (6-4, 2.57 ERA, 105.0 innings, 73 strikeouts).

Series History
Longwood and Radford have met 21 times overall since 1985, and the Lancers lead the all-time series, 11-10.  The Highlanders, however, have won seven of the last eight games between the two schools since Longwood became Division I eligible in 2008, including a three-game Big South Conference series sweep last season in Farmville by scores of 8-4, 10-6 and 6-5 … the first time playing each other as league members.

Pitching Rotations
Longwood will have a pitching rotation that features junior RHP Aaron Myers (3-1, 1.65 ERA) on Saturday, junior LHP Brandon Vick (2-2, 2.64 ERA) on Sunday and either freshman RHP Mitchell Kuebbing (1-1, 2.22 ERA) or to be determined on Monday.  Radford is expected to counter with sophomore LHP Michael Boyle (1-2, 6.52 ERA) on Saturday, sophomore RHP Dylan Nelson (4-0, 1.97 ERA) on Sunday and sophomore RHP Ryan Meisinger (2-0, 3.56 ERA) on Monday.

A Look At Longwood Offensively / Season Statistics
Longwood is batting .270 through 26 games while averaging 4.8 runs with 17 home runs, six triples, 35 doubles, 121 RBI and 21 stolen bases.  Matt Dickason (.346, 1 HR, 3 3B, 5 2B, 9 RBI, 15 R, 2 SB) has led the Lancers, followed by Brandon Delk (did not play at Virginia-injured, .310, 5 HR, 1 3B, 2 2B, 17 RBI, 17 R), Scott Burkett (.302, 2 HR, 5 2B, 11 RBI, 13 R), Mac McCafferty (.284, 1 HR, 1 2B, 14 RBI, 7 R), along with C.J. Roth (did not play at Virginia-injured, .280, 1 3B, 2 2B, 8 RBI, 11 R, 2 SB), Kyri Washington (.266, 4 HR, 7 2B, 18 RBI, 17 R, 5 SB) and Alex Lewis (.253, 2 2B, 14 RBI, 12 R, 2 SB).

A Look At Longwood Pitching / Season Statistics
Longwood has a team ERA of 3.98 through 235.0 innings with 175 strikeouts while limiting the opposition to a .253 batting average.  RHP Aaron Myers (3-1, 1.65 ERA, 49.0 IP, 51K) has led the Lancer starters, making six appearances with six starts, two complete games and one shutout.  Also throwing well from the mound has been LHP Brandon Vick (2-2, 2.64 ERA, 44.1 IP, 22K, six appearances-six starts-two complete games).  RHP Mitchell Kuebbing (1-1, 2.22 ERA, 24.1 IP, 17K, nine appearances-two starts) and RHP Travis Burnette (1-3, 3.81 ERA, 28.1 IP, 15K, four saves, 13 appearances) have been solid out of the bullpen.

NCAA Statistics (through March 23)
Longwood ranked 16th in Division I home runs, 33rd in double plays, 43rd in hits, 72nd in triples and 73rd in slugging percentage.  Aaron Myers ranked fifth in Division I strikeouts, eighth in complete games, 13th in games started and 92nd in WHIP.  Brandon Vick also ranked eighth in complete games and 13th in games started.  Allen Ellis ranked 13th in games started.  Brandon Delk ranked 21st  in home runs and 60th in total bases.  Brandon Harvell ranked 25th in sacrifice bunts.  Matt Dickason ranked 26th in hits and triples, and 55th in total bases.  Travis Burnette ranked 52nd in saves.  Kyri Washington ranked 59th in home runs.  Alex Owens ranked 85th in doubles.

Big South Statistics (through March 27) / Weekly Report (PDF)
Aaron Myers led the Big South in innings pitched and strikeouts, and was tied for first in complete games and shutouts, fourth in ERA and tied for ninth in opponent batting average.  Matt Dickason was tied for first in triples, tied for third in total bases, tied for fourth in hits and eighth in slugging percentage.  Brandon Delk was tied for first in home runs, fifth in total bases and seventh in slugging percentage.  Brandon Vick was tied for first in complete games and third in innings pitched.  Travis Burnette was tied for fourth in appearances and tied for fifth in saves.  Kyri Washington was tied for fourth in home runs and tied for seventh in total bases.  Alex Owens was fifth in walks and tied for seventh in home runs.  Colton Konvicka was tied for eighth in stolen bases.

Swinging Hot Bats
Matt Dickason has hit safely in 21 of 26 games this season, batting a team-best .346 (37-107).  Scott Burkett has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games (20-48, .417) with two home runs, two doubles, seven RBI, nine runs and four walks.  Mac McCafferty has hit safely in six of his last eight games (12-28, .429) with one home run, eight RBI, three runs and four walks.  Colton Konvicka has hit safely in six of his last nine games (8-36, .222) with one double, seven runs and four walks.  Kyri Washington has hit safely in seven of his last 10 games (12-45, .244) with three home runs, three doubles, seven RBI and six runs.

Throwing Really Well
Aaron Myers has only allowed three earned runs (0.77) in his last four starts (2-1), including three complete games over 35.0 innings with 35 strikeouts and six walks.  Mitchell Kuebbing has only allowed three earned runs (1.65) in his last six appearances (0-0), including his first two collegiate starts over 16.1 innings with 12 strikeouts and six walks.

Big South-Only
Scott Burkett is hitting .522 (12-23) in six league games with one home run, two doubles, three RBI, five runs and three walks.  Mac McCafferty is hitting .438 (7-16) in five league games with five RBI, one run and four walks.  Matt Dickason is hitting .423 (11-26) in six league games with one home run, one triple, one double, four RBI, three runs and two walks.  Mitchell Kuebbing has a 1.00 ERA in three league games, including one start, pitching 9.0 innings with six strikeouts and two walks.  Aaron Myers has a 1.59 ERA in two league games, including two starts, pitching 17.0 innings with 20 strikeouts and four walks.

Season Superlatives
Scott Burkett, Matt Dickason and Kyri Washington each have nine multi-hit games, followed by Brandon Delk (8), Mac McCafferty (6) and Alex Owens (5).  Owens, Delk, Washington each have four multi-RBI games, followed by Burkett (3) and McCafferty (3).  Delk had team season-bests of four hits, five RBI and three runs against Marist (2/22).  Washington had two home runs and eight total bases at William and Mary (3/19).  Owens had 15 putouts at East Tennessee State (2/17).  C.J. Roth had seven assists against Marist (2/23) and Charleston Southern (3/15).  Aaron Myers went the distance in complete games at Wofford (2/28) and Ohio (3/8), and posted 10 strikeouts against Charleston Southern (3/14) and Campbell (3/21).  Brandon Vick went the distance in a complete game against Ohio (3/8) and Campbell (3/22).

Streaks Of Note
Alex Owens has the team's longest hitting streak of 10 games (15-35, .429), tied for sixth-best in the Big South this season, and a streak of reaching base of 11 games.  C.J. Roth has the second longest hitting streak of nine games (13-38, .342), and a streak of reaching base at 10 games.  Matt Dickason has an eight-game hitting streak (14-35, .400) to his credit this season.  Scott Burkett has a seven-game hitting streak (16-28, .571) to his credit this season, and the longest current streak of reaching base of 13 games.  Brandon Delk has a streak of reaching base of 12 games.

Perfect Near The End
Longwood is a perfect 11-0 this season when leading after eight innings and 10-0 when leading after seven innings.  The Lancers are 7-1 when leading after six innings, and 10-4 when out-hitting their opponents.

Up Next
Longwood will return home to host the University of Richmond in a non-conference game on April 2 at 5 p.m. at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers will be back on the road to play at South Division Gardner-Webb University for another Big South series April 4-6.
