BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Freshman Robert Willis/Ashburn ran an 8K time of 28:37, and junior Russell Reed/Onemo posted a time of 28:51, to lead Longwood University to 197 points in men's cross country on Saturday morning and an eighth-place finish among nine teams at the VMI Invitational in Buena Vista. Liberty University won the race, serving as a Big South Preview, with its 19 points. The Flames swept the first four individual places, including race winner Caleb Edmonds (26:12) at the Vista Links Golf Course, which will also host the Big South Conference Championship on November 2. Longwood will next participate in the prestigious Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University on October 5 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Willis finished 30th overall among the 80 runners, while Russell Reed placed 36th over the five mile event. They were followed by junior Nick Reed/Fairfax (29:04, 44th), freshman Johnny Leder/Amelia (29:27, 51st) and sophomore Seth Taylor/ Chesapeake (31:32, 70th) to round out the scoring positions. Freshmen Mark Sohl/Burke (31:34, 71st), Shea Pennington/ Richmond (31:44, 73rd), Ian Court/Alexandria (31:56, 74th) and Marc Mawyer/Glen Allen (32:32, 77th) also ran for the Lancers.
Liberty was followed by High Point (51), Campbell (93), VMI (115), Coastal Carolina (121), Radford (180), UNC Asheville (187), Longwood (197) and Tusculum (280).
