FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University fourth-year women's basketball head coach
Bill Reinson has announced the appointment of
Sherrie Tucker as the squad's newest assistant coach. Tucker comes to Longwood after serving as an assistant coach for Team Sol, a girl's basketball AAU program, and head coach for the Villa Maria boy's basketball team in Abingdon, Maryland. A four-year standout at Coppin State University, she spent time playing professionally overseas for the Etzella Basketball Club in Luxembourg from 2007-08.
"Sherrie will be a great fit for our staff," said Reinson. "She is knowledgeable, personable and very competitive. She was a self-made player, who achieved her success through hard work and dedication to improving her game. Those are qualities that we are trying to instill in our student-athletes. We are excited to welcome her."
During her time with Team Sol, Tucker assisted with all aspects of the program. She was specifically responsible for holding individual skill sessions with players, implementing new offensive plays, keeping team/individual statistics during games, and instructing athletes in game strategies and techniques. As head coach for the Villa Maria boy's team, Tucker coordinated scheduling, transportation and academic support for her players, in addition to planning and supervising practices, and modeling good sportsmanship.
"I'm extremely grateful and excited for the opportunity to be a part of the Longwood University family," said Tucker. "As an assistant coach, I look forward to making an important impact on the women's basketball program here. Go Lancers!"
At Coppin State, Tucker led the Lady Eagles to a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular-season titles, MEAC Tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances (2004-05, 2005-06). She was a two-time MEAC Player of the Year selection and All-MEAC First Team honoree. Tucker, who earned her squad's Most Valuable Player award for three consecutive years, finished her career ranked third all-time at Coppin State with 1,389 points. As a junior, Tucker averaged career highs of 15.3 points and 33.8 minutes with 4.7 rebounds, as well. During her senior campaign, she shot a personal-best 41% (175-425) from the field.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Tucker graduated from Coppin State with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 2006.
