Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Longwood University split a Big South Conference baseball doubleheader at Liberty University Saturday in Lynchburg, winning game one by a score of 6-2, before falling in game two, 8-1.  Sophomore Brandon Delk/Newport News hit a home run and had two RBI, senior Justin Lacy/Glen Allen had a triple and two RBI and junior Scott Burkett/Williamsburg had a double and two RBI in the opener for the Lancers (12-16, 4-5 Big South), while sophomores Brandon Vick/Newport News and Aaron Myers/Newport News gained the pitching win and save, respectively.  Danny Grauer had four hits and four RBI in the nightcap and series finale for the Flames (17-11, 6-3 Big South), while Trey Lambert earned the pitching win.  Longwood will play a non-conference game on the road at the University of Tennessee of the Southeastern Conference on Tuesday, April 2 at 3 p.m. in Knoxville, Tennessee.

In game one, Longwood scored its four runs in the third inning to lead 4-0, getting two big hits from Delk (1-4, 2 RBI) and Burkett (2-4, 2 RBI), respectively.  Delk hit a two-run home run to also score sophomore Kenny Cassidy/Chesapeake (2-3), who had reached on a one-out single, and Burkett added a two-run double to plate both freshman Colton Konvicka/Richmond (1-4) and junior Alex Owens/Purcellville (0-3).  Konvicka had singled and stole second base before Owens was intentionally walked ahead of Burkett.

Liberty scored a run in the sixth to make it 4-1 when Jake Kimble (1-3) led-off with a single and scored on a two-out RBI single by Ashton Perritt (1-4, RBI).  The Flames added another run in the seventh for a 4-2 deficit after Justin Sizemore (1-3) hit a two-out double and scored on a run-scoring single from Grauer (1-3, RBI).

Longwood added two insurance runs in the ninth to lead 6-2 as Burkett and junior Matt Dickason/Chesapeake (1-4) opened the inning with singles before scoring on a two-run, pinch-hit triple by Lacy (1-1, 2 RBI) with one out.

Vick (2-3) started for Longwood and pitched the first 6.2 highly-effective innings, taking a perfect game into the sixth before scattering four hits and two runs, both earned, with no walks and no strikeouts.  Myers (5) tossed the final 2.1 scoreless innings for the save, yielding no hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

Brooks Roy (3-3) started and pitched 8.0 innings for Liberty, allowing seven hits and six runs, all earned, with two walks and seven strikeouts.

In game two, Liberty scored two runs in the first courtesy a two-out, two-run double by Grauer (4-4, 4 RBI) to score both Perritt (1-4) and Bryan Aanderud (2-5, 2 RBI), who had singled and doubled to begin the at bat.  The Flames added two more runs in the third to lead 4-0 after Trey Wimmer (1-5) singled with two outs and scored on an RBI double from Sizemore (2-5, RBI), who crossed the plate on a run-scoring single by Grauer.

Longwood avoided the shutout with a run in the eighth inning to make it 4-1 after Burkett (1-4), Dickason (1-3) and freshman Kyri Washington/Prospect (1-3, RBI) each singled, the latter scoring Burkett.

Liberty answered with four runs in the eighth to provide for the final margin, getting back-to-back doubles from Sizemore and Grauer, who later scored via a wild pitch.  Aanderud added a two-run single to plate both Nick Lacik (0-3) and Dalton Britt (1-3), who had each walked.  The Flames could have done more damage in the inning, having loaded the bases with one out, but stranded the runners.

Freshman Joe Manion/Midlothian (1-3) started for Longwood and pitched the first 3.0 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, two earned, with no walks and no strikeouts.  Classmate Travis Burnette/Lynchburg was the most efficient of three other pitchers for the Lancers, tossing 3.0 shutout innings and yielding only one hit with no walks and two strikeouts.

Lambert (5-1) started for Liberty and pitched 8.0 outstanding innings, only allowing the three singles in the eighth, along with the one earned run and no walks with nine strikeouts.  He was perfect through seven innings for the Flames.
