LYNCHBURG, Va. – Dalton Britt had two hits and three RBI, and Nick Paxton had three hits and an RBI, to lead host Liberty University to an 8-1 Big South Conference baseball victory against Longwood University on Friday night at Liberty Stadium in Lynchburg. Kyler Morgan/Lancaster, Pennsylvania took the pitching loss with the first 6.1 innings on the mound. Longwood and Liberty will continue and complete their three-game weekend series on Saturday, March 30 with a doubleheader in Lynchburg beginning at 1 p.m.
Liberty took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the third inning as a two-out, RBI single by Ryan Cordell (2-5, RBI) scored Nick Lacik (1-3), who had reached on an infield single.
Longwood answered with a run in the fourth inning to tie it at 1-1 after junior
Scott Burkett/Williamsburg (1-4) singled with one out and scored on a two-out RBI single from Washington (1-2, RBI).
Liberty responded with single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to lead 3-1, getting an RBI single from Danny Grauer (1-4, RBI) to score Paxton (3-4, RBI), who had also singled, and an RBI single by Bryan Aanderud (2-4, RBI) to score Dalton Sype (1-2), who had walked. The Flames secured their win with four more runs in the seventh to lead 7-1, and added a final run in the eighth to provide for the final margin. Trey Wimmer (1-5, RBI) got it started in the seventh with a run-scoring single to plate Aanderud, who had also singled, and Britt (2-4, 3 RBI) had the big blow with a three-run double to score Wimmer, Paxton and Alex Close (0-3) – the latter two who had walked. Paxton closed it out with an RBI triple that plated Aanderud, who had walked again.
Herndon (3-2) took care of the rest for Liberty, pitching the complete 9.0 innings, scattering six hits and one run, earned, with two walks and nine strikeouts.
Morgan (3-2) started for Longwood and tossed the first 6.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and five runs, all earned, with three walks and three strikeouts. Roth (2-4) had two hits for the Lancers.
