Longwood Falls To Visiting Campbell 83-73

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Sophomore Trey Freeman scored 19 points to lead five players in double figures as visiting Campbell University took an 83-73 Big South Conference men's basketball victory against Longwood University on Wednesday night at Willett Hall in Farmville.  The Fighting Camels (7-9, 2-0 Big South) outscored the Lancers (3-13, 0-2 Big South) 16-7 over the final 3:29 to gain the North Division road win with Freeman adding a game-high 10 assists for a double-double, while Marvelle Harris and Darius Leonard each had 15 points.  Junior captain Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach scored a game-high 23 points for the hosts.  Longwood will welcome Charleston Southern University of the South Division this Saturday afternoon, January 12, at 2 p.m. in a game that will be televised exclusively on ESPN3 as part of the new Big South Conference Saturday “Game of the Week” package.  It will be the first-ever ESPN Production of a home intercollegiate sports event on-campus from Willett Hall.
   
Campbell took an early 12-6 lead at 14:08 as Leonard scored its first six points.  Longwood battled back with a 14-6 run to lead 20-18 at 7:11 following a three-point field goal by junior captain David Robinson|Chesterfield who scored eight points, including another three-pointer.  It was tied at 22-22 with 6:20 left until halftime before the Lancers scored seven unanswered points to take their largest lead at 29-22 with 3:50 on the first-half clock, as Carey closed the run with a three-pointer along with a steal and fastbreak slam dunk.  The Fighting Camels, however, closed the period with a 10-3 run with baskets from five different players to tie the game at the intermission, 32-32.  Leonard had 10 points at the break, while Carey (9), Robinson (8) and redshirt-sophomore Jeylani Dublin|Brooklyn, New York (7) combined for 24 points.
   
Campbell scored the first points of the second half on an old-fashioned three-point play by Leonard, and CU extended its lead to 49-40 at 14:18 after a jumper from Leonard around eight quick points by Freeman.  It was 56-45 at 11:29 after a three-pointer from Darian Hooker, before Longwood again rallied with a 19-9 run to close to within 65-64 at 5:05.  Carey sparked the run with eight points, making two more three-pointers, and LU was within 67-66 with 3:48 left before the guests secured the outcome with their 16-7 game-ending run that included 7-8 free throws, 4-4 by Freeman.
   
“Here we go … this is what league play is going to be like on a night-in, night-out basis,” said 10th-year head coach Mike Gillian.  “This is going to be a continuous stretch of close, hard-fought games that will be decided in the last four minutes.  We put ourselves in that position once-again tonight and, like on Saturday, just did not make enough plays down the stretch to come out on top.”
   
Carey led Longwood with his game-high 23 points, including four three-pointers, adding six rebounds.  Dublin had 12 points and six rebounds for the Lancers, and freshman Karl Ziegler|Annandale finished with a career-high 11 points off the bench.  LU shot 44.3% (27-61) from the field, including 38.9% (7-18) on three-pointers, and 63.2% (12-19) at the free throw line.     

Freeman led Campbell with his 19 points, tying his career-high with the game-high 10 assists for his double-double, adding seven rebounds and also tying his career-high with a game-high four steals.  Harris and Leonard each finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, Hooker had 14 points off the bench, and Reco McCarter contributed 10 points.  CU shot 51.6% (32-62) from the field, including 60.0% (3-5) on three-pointers, and 88.9% (16-18) at the line.
   
Longwood and Campbell were playing for the seventh time since 2006-07, and the Fighting Camels now lead the closely-played series, 4-3.
