HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Longwood University women's basketball trailed by just four with 11 minutes remaining in the contest before dropping an 83-66 decision at Big South Conference opponent High Point University (12-7, 6-2) on Thursday evening in High Point, N.C. The Lancers (9-10, 6-2) were paced by freshman
Daeisha Brown|Richmond, who tallied her third double-double of the season with a personal-best 29 points and 10 rebounds. Longwood will return to action on Saturday, January 26, when the squad travels to conference opponent and in-state rival Liberty University. Tipoff is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
High Point opened the game with seven straight points before freshman

Crystal Smith|Richmond, to make it a one point game with 15:53 still to go in the first half. HPU scored back-to-back buckets from the paint, but LU quickly answered with an 11-1 run to take its first lead of the contest, up 19-14, with 11:09 remaining in the period. The lead would not stick, as HPU scored six unanswered to regain the upper hand at 20-19 with 9:39 remaining in the first. Longwood took the lead for its final time in the contest on a jumper from Smith, making it 21-20, but HPU pulled away for good on the next play. The Panthers outscored the Lancers, 17-9, to go ahead, 40-30, at 3:27, and although LU would cut the buffer to four on buckets from Brown and senior
Erin Neal|Durham, N.C., HPU went into halftime with a 45-37 advantage.
The hosts scored the first five points of the second half to make it a 50-37 game, but Longwood would not go quietly, using a 15-6 run over the next six and a half minutes to cut the buffer to just four once again, down 56-52, with 11:12 still to play. The Lancers would not come any closer, though, as HPU quickly regained a double-digit margin, up 64-54, with 9:25 remaining. Longwood made it an eight-point game on a pair of free throws from Brown, but High Point outscored the visitors, 19-10, in the final minutes to seal the 83-66 victory.
In addition to her game- and career-high 29 points, Brown tied a season high with 10 boards in the outing. Neal and classmate
Chelsea Coward|Mechanicsville added to the offensive effort with nine points apiece, while Williams logged eight points. Smith totaled seven points before coming out of the game with an injury, bringing her career total to 999 points. As a team, the Lancers shot 42% (25-59) from the floor, including 31% (4-13) from beyond the arc, and 60% (12-20) from the line.
Taylor Tremblay led High Point with 19 points. Cheyenne Parker totaled a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. As a whole, the Panthers shot 48% (31-65) from the field, 21% (4-19) from three-point territory and 90% (17-19) from the foul line. High Point will play its next contest against Radford on Jan. 26 beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Thursday's contest marked the 26th meeting ever between Longwood and High Point in the sport of women's basketball. The Panthers hold a 15-11 advantage in the all-time series.
