FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University field hockey team is slated to host two games at the Athletics Complex in Farmville this weekend. The Lancers will first square off against The College of William and Mary of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) on Friday, August 31 at 7 p.m. in the squad's home opener, before taking on No. 5 Duke University of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) on Sunday, September 2 at 1 p.m.
Longwood Notes
• Longwood is currently looking for its first win of the young season after dropping a 3-1 decision versus St. Francis and a 2-1 decision at Lock Haven on August 25-26.
• The Lancers return six starters among 11 letterwinners from last year's squad.
• Tri-captain
Stacey de Grandhomme currently leads Longwood with three points. The team's top goal scorer from a year ago tallied her first point of the new season with an assist against St. Francis. The following day, she notched her first goal of 2012 at Lock Haven.
• Sophomore
Jessica Diaz has added to the offensive effort with one goal for two points, while senior
Kaity Byrum and freshman
Jennifer Burris have each contributed one assist for one point.
• Freshman goalkeeper
Meg Mitchell has turned in two, complete-game performances in the cage for the Lancers. She has totaled 15 saves and a .750 save percentage through the first two games of the season. Mitchell is currently ranked fourth in the NorPac for saves per game (7.50), just behind a three-way tie for first (8.50 avg. per game).
• Seven freshmen have seen action in both of the first two games of the young season. Three of those rookies –Mitchell, Burris and O'Connor earned a starting spot for the contests.
Scouting William and Mary
• William and Mary currently owns a 2-0 record after defeating Davidson, 5-1, and Appalachian State, 7-2.
• Christine Johnson leads the offensive attack for the Tribe with four goals for eight points. She was named the CAA Co-Player of the Week after tying a school record with four goals against Davidson.
• Allison Moran has six points (2 goals, 2 assists) so far this season, as well.
Scouting Duke
• Duke was ranked fifth in the 2012 National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFHCA) Preseason Poll on August 21.
• The Blue Devils are 1-1 in 2012 after opening the season with a 1-0 loss to Drexel and a 2-1 win against Temple.
• Jessica Buttinger and Chelsea Amsley lead Duke with one goal and two points apiece. Martine Chichizola has one assist for one point.
Series History
• William and Mary currently leads the all-time series, 9-0, against Longwood. The Tribe defeated the Lancers, 2-1, when the squads last met a year ago on September 9, 2011.
• Sunday's meeting will mark the 14th meeting all-time between Duke and Longwood. After a 1-0 home win last season on September 11, 2011, the Blue Devils now lead the series against the Lancers, 13-0.
