Mooldijk Sets Record in Loss to #4 Minutewomen

FARMVILLE, Va.- Junior goalkeeper Sophie Mooldijk made 20 saves and broke a school record on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, Longwood field hockey fell to No. 4 UMass, 10-0, at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Niamh McKenzie put the Minutewomen (14-1, 8-0 MAC) up two minutes into the match, firing one home from the top of the shooting circle. Emily Barrett and Amber Fairon put two more on the board to give UMass a 3-0 lead after the first.
  • A second-quarter hat trick by McKenzie and a goal by Fairon extended the Minutewomen lead to 7-0 going into halftime. Mooldijk made 12 total saves in the second quarter, and at 18:44 mark, she made history, breaking the single-season saves record set in 2003. The record breaker came on a sequence of three-straight saves from the Longwood goalkeeper.
  • Fairon finished her hat-trick at 31:40, pushing the UMass lead to 8-0. After a corner attempt, the Minutewomen earned a penalty stroke, where Lina Kroeger extended the lead to 9-0. At 40:29, Kristy Leonard wrapped up the scoring with UMass's 10th goal of the afternoon.
  • Mooldijk made 22 saves on the day. She now has four of the seven games with 20-or-more saves by a goalkeeper in NCAA Division I this season. Mooldijk broke Julie Patterson's school record of 182 saves which stood since 2003. Her 199 saves on the year lead the country.
