ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Longwood University posted 214 points in men's cross country to finish ninth among 12 teams at the 2012 Big South Cross Country Championships hosted by Winthrop University Saturday at the Winthrop Coliseum and Farm in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Liberty University won its eighth-straight conference team title with 28 points, including four of the top 10 runners, while Jacob Smith of High Point University was the individual race winner with his time of 24:35 over the 8K course. Sean Flynn|Goodview (Roanoke Catholic) with his time of 26:52 to place 42nd among the field of 90 league competitors. Longwood will participate in the NCAA Southeast Regional Cross Country Championships on Friday, November 9, at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. The men's 10K race will begin at 1:15 p.m.
Flynn ran his fastest 8K of the season and was followed across the finish line by sophomores
Trey Thomas|Stafford (Mountain View) (26:56, 45th) and
Russell Reed|Onemo (Mathews) (27:00, 47th), freshmen
Seth Taylor|Chesapeake (Grassfield) (27:01, 48th) and
Adam Link|Williamsburg (Walsingham Academy) (27:05, 50th), along with sophomore
Nick Reed|Fairfax (Robinson) (27:22, 55th). Thomas and
Nick Reed each also ran season-best 8K times, and
Russell Reed was named to the Big South All-Academic Team.
Liberty was followed by High Point (49), Campbell (92), VMI (100), UNC Asheville (158), Coastal Carolina (178), Winthrop (185), Radford (192), Longwood (214), Gardner-Webb (320), Charleston Southern (347) and Presbyterian (365). Individually, the top-10 finishers each earned All-Big South Conference honors.
