LEXINGTON, Va. -- Longwood University opened its 2011 men's cross country campaign by scoring 72 points to finish fifth among five teams Friday afternoon at the VMI Relays in Lexington at the Virginia Horse Center. The University of Cincinnati took first place with six points, and Bearcat Eric Finan took first place individually with his time of 18:47, while the Lancers were led by sophomore
Kyle Moller|Gainesville (Battlefield) with his time of 22:52 over four miles. Longwood will run again next Saturday, September 10, at the James Madison Invitational in New Market near Harrisonburg.
At VMI, the non-traditional relay race included groups of two runners completing two legs of two miles each for eight miles total among duos. Longwood was led by Moller (22:52) and senior
Robert Webb|Williamsburg (Lafayette) (23:58) who finished 24th with their combined time of 46:50. They were followed by freshmen
Ryan Canoy|Williamsburg (Bruton) (22:58) and
Matt Wallace|Lynchburg (Brookville) (23:53) (46:51, 25th), along with seniors
Anthony Caldwell| Charlottesville (Manchester) (23:02) and
Alex Strittmater|Haymarket (Battlefield) (24:02) (47:04, 26th).
Following Cincinnati in the team results were VMI (21), Concord (34), Radford (47), and Longwood.
